What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Help me out, /asp/. I’m an ESL streaming in English. Started 1 week ago. Initial follower growth was great but it has slowed down so I want to determine who I should market myself to. At the moment, I have anywhere between 5-20 CCV.

I checked my stats and 80% of my total viewership comes from my country. Unfortunately, for VTuber (and overall streamer) fans in my country, they prefer those who stream in our language. I checked what other fast growing VTubers from my country were doing and most of them stream in our language.

While the growth is tempting, I don’t really want to limit myself by catering to fans in my country only. And I think I’ve been doing fine streaming in English because I’ve gotten quite a few loyal viewers from other countries and I don’t want to alienate them now. But maybe I’m spreading myself too thin by not focusing on a certain market? Though that’s the mindset of corpo VTubers, so I’m not sure if that should even apply to me. What do you guys think?

Like you said you're not corpo so it doesn't really even apply unless you're dead set on becoming corpo and nothing more, which would be retarded. Just do what you want to do and the followers will come naturally. If you want more viewers there's many more methods to increase exposure besides language.

If you want to stream in English then do so in English. If another Brazillian joins your stream and starts talking in Portuguese that's just them doing their things. VTubing is online so physical countries don't really matter, more so the language that they speak. English is big, basically all of Europe and any other thirdie that has electricity will use EN. It's basically English and broken Japanese is the consensus.

custom scenes are always nice but you can also check out the community made ones if you're on a budget (usually free or 3-10$)
just google vtuber assets I think and you should get a bunch of resource lists

you can also go the totally free route and make your own tho! for animated screens I'd go canva but you can also just frankenstein assets from resource collections and sites.

(slugma has a archived stream on design but there are also some good guides on yt on basic graphic design for overlays!)

btw the nice css chatboxes/message boxes are also for free on git I'm pretty sure

Audio stuff has always looked overwhelming to me. How long does it take to learn/get used to the basic audio things?

>> No.22454483

>>22453722
In general it is not that hard to learn. It is just increasing and decreasing the volume of specific parts of the audio.

Basic tools are
Compressor/Limiter makes it so that it sounds good when you go loud.
Expander/Gate tries to make your mic only activate when you talk.
Low/Highpass filters remove very deep sounds and very high pitched sounds.
Equalizer makes your voice sound more gooder.

The biggest issue is that most paid plugins don't work directly in OBS, so you need extra stuff like plugin hosts which complicates things.

You're exception proves the rule. Saying Tyler one has a shitty mic therefore I don't need one is dumb. You're not Tyler. You're not as entertaining, you're not as good at a game. You'll never be Tyler, because Tyler is already Tyler. Look at most of the top streamers, they are not using usb mics and actually have pretty expensive set ups. Have bad audio is going to be a huge turn off and just applying a giant debuff. But hey don't listen, the ones who do will make it and you won't. It won't be just because of your mic of course but it certainly won't help, and will be a huge turn off

>> No.22468682

GoXLR has better internals and preamp than anything else in its price range. You have to go way more expensive to find something better specifically for that. It also has enough juice for power hungry dynamic mics, which you want for streaming. Otherwise you're gonna be forced to use a cloudlifter CL-1 just so people can hear your microphone, which is an extra expense.

Voice Meter and virtual audio cable are extremely buggy, unreliable software that introduce a headache of problems It's a convoluted mess. Windows audio is bad enough already, it only becomes worse when you use hacked solutions.

So you're correct, you are dumb. You bought a product you don't know how to use, and lack the experience with the alternatives to know how good of a product you bought.

Their hearts aren't in it and they're esentially larpers. For those serious about this the 250$ for good used equipment isn't a high asking price when models are already 500 to 1k. If you're just in it for fun and care nothing about your quality and improving, then why be in a thread like this? 100 to 250 on the higher end for good audio isn't some outrageous number. GoXLR is good but generally I’d say that if you’re starting out and want an interface with functionality like that (powerful software and easy-to-use with a strong pre-amp) and more importantly if you want to go for an XLR setup, I’d go for the Wave XLR; it’s useful even if you aren’t using it for streaming, and you can use its software with USB mics as well; it’s cheaper than the GoXLR mini too

There’s also the Scarlett Solo which is cheaper than the Wave XLR but doesn’t come with the same type of software and isn’t streamer focused

Everyone involved has been completely ignoring a vital part of a stream anyway. The game audio. The only part of this discussion has been about mics, which is only one part of it.
Did you know with the use of a good compressor/limiter VST you can tame almost any form of game audio?
Then you don't have to be and adjust and "are my audio levels ok chat" andy. Auto-ducking can be used as insurance too.

That said, all of this is entirely autism, unless it's blatantly terrible, nobody gives a single shit. Tons of streamers of all sizes have bad/average audio and nobody cares.

If you’re starting out then yeah; as long as you know which end of the mic is the right one to talk into and how to stop yourself from clipping and the background audio from being louder than you, you should be fine with just any old USB mic
As you grow you can probably get a better audio kit (you can start out with an XLR mic if you want even though plenty of USB mics are also very good now, like the Wave 3 or the BEACN Mic (which you should probably be buying instead of an SM7B if you want a dynamic mic early)) but early on a Wave XLR should be just fine

Get an xlr mic, a cheap interface. I recommend an audio technica 2020 and scarlet 2i2 or the single version. Get obs studio. Set up your twitch and youtube, get restream. Start getting art of your charcter for thumbnails etc. Have your branding ready to go, get a logo. Figure out your schedule.

These are deviant art quality.
a few hundred bucks for a fully original, fully rigged model is perfectly reasonable, same thing with waiting months for it... but not in this quality.
This is how a highschooler uses an airbsrush. He is just pumping them out.
The max he charges is 200$ and starting with 80$, the only currency that alligns with the 250 and 600 numbers is ILS

Good morning /asp/ I'm late as always to the conversation but it won't stop me from contributing.

First of all the few *friends, who were discussing audio stuff. I've posted myself a lot here and asked people to check for mic quality and stuff. I run a 10+ year old 100€ auna mic through USB and absolutely no editing and I've had barely anyone complain. I realized yesterday i was actually sort of having it in the wrong position and now the sound is pretty much perfect. I can't possibly justify to myself paying for soundproofing despite sitting in an almost empty 30m2 room or upgrading the mic if I can't tell the difference. I'm not telling you what to do and what not to do, but think about it this way: It really isn't 2007 anymore, but that means that technology has come far too. While i believe build quality has gone down a lot in some areas, even cheaper entry level microphones are gonna have good sound quality. The hardest part is going to pick a model because you can't be entirely sure how it sounds beforehand. If that's the case make yourself aware of return policies and maybe even order multiple mics to have side-by-side comparisons. You can send stuff back and while it is effort, you will learn a lot in the process.

Don't always take others words for it. When in doubt nothing beats experimenting yourself.

As for the recent fiver artist conversation, my artist has been taking his time, but i knew that beforehand and he's normally not open for commissions. We've been working over 2 months on my design (it's just a picture not a model), but he's been a great artist. In this case of a fiver artist... it's hard to say, but a lot of young aspiring artists are terrible at managing time it doesn't always mean they are bad artists. They are two different skillsets. I won't comment on the quality, if it was worth your money i don't see any problem.

This was my daily textwall, love and kisses.

I'm already in the process of cutting it up and mix-and-matching it. I believe the gradient on the middle leather piece is too jarring on an otherwise flat design. I really like the darkwashed design of B. (pants and stuff) but the contrast of the beige undershirt and the middle piece on the torso of A&C look really good too. I'll give it a good shuffling, but i do believe it's very close to being perfect, i probably wouldn't mind any of them, but i'll stick gradient-less because as a 3D model it's probably gonna lose those anyways.

On your 3D model in vseeface? Is it rigged with ARKit blendshapes?

Yeah that's the entire point since it's got the best commercial facial tracking on the market.

>Is it rigged with ARKit blendshapes
I tried using the test model provided with the soft. I guess it isn't. I'm in the process of making my own model though and today I was intending to do the facerig, any tutos on that ARKit thingy? (using blender)

Let's talk clips

There's five main things you can clip.

1 - Funny moments. Something happens in stream and it's either ironic, funny by itself, or whatever. The point is that the moment itself is all that is needed
Example: https://www.tiktok.com/@kitsune_eve/video/7082418536907427077
She's carefully dodging, looks to be in a good place, and then *bam*. This is not based off of the thing you say being funny itself, but the actions being funny

2 - Jokes/memes
Might not age well, but just telling a joke unrelated to the stream.
This can work well if you are familiar with the game - I saw a clip recently with someone playing New Vegas, and when the doctor revealed the inkblot, streamer said "smash".
Only really works because of the current proliferation of smash/pass

3 - Injokes
Different to memes in that it's specific to your chat. Might not be great for getting new people to look at you
Think ShyLily's current 'womp womp'. I've had ~10 different variations pop up on my youtube.

4 - Coombait.
Ara ara, word slips, whatever. Any thirst trap works.

5 - Good plays
Nailing a perfect shot across the map, or perfect skill use, or whatever. Something that makes you as a watcher go "wow"

Now, you can probably fold 1,2, and 3 into one of "funny stuff", vs Coom Stuff, vs Cool stuff. Memes work well for short term gains, but only until a new one comes along. Smash/pass isn't going to make sense in ~3 months, so people diving through your account won't understand.

I have an older model from early 2020 and the stuff added from VBridger + iFacialMocap can be useful if you need to use glasses. Better eye tracking overall, but it tends to lose track of my eyes more easily when I move my head up.

One thing that's useful too, is keeping my jaw from opening my model's mouth. Which prevents the endless open mouth syndrome from happening.

TL;DR old as fuck models still get benefits, just not as many.

Do artists charge more or less for taking existing art/mostly fleshed out ideas instead of developing art from just a description?

yeah i know how this shit is, the problem is that i don't want to be the guy that clips stuff of myself that isn't actually funny while basically holding a sign saying "i did this thing that is funny, please laugh"
as far as I can tell I'm doing well because I'm at least not a 2view even when my friends aren't around to watch but the only time an audience member has made a twitch clip was when i was making a weird noise while jumping around in a game

Depends on the amount of revisions and the artists.
Some artists would rather not work with prior reference, but if you go blank to an artist and you taje 10 revisions it would cost you more.
Design is a real skill, a good artist that you like can pick at your brain and come up with a design 10 times better than you could cobble in picrew

DO NOT get anything like this.

This is a perfect example of taking Live2D and spending way too much time and energy making it look 3D. You can probably hire some asian anime coders to make you a shader that does it the other way around for a fraction of the cost.

This is a reasonable ask for thaf much work.
What's crazy is how they spent over 1k just for the apu stuff

That's what i'm thinking aswell, if you try so hard to make Live2D look like 3D, wouldn't it be easier to just make a decent 3D model? Live2D was meant to be a shortcut to have quick and dirty animations on a png without having to work on individual frames, and i do think that Live2D retains a somewhat unique style, but just in terms of technical realization I think it might be a little bit on the backwards side.

But i'm very biased, since i just like 3D models more.

You could never get this look.
3d is not magic.
Something super polished in 3d will also cost you outragous amounts and you can't just create a shader to whallah everything looks like a 2d drawing.
Go look how hard arcsys works to bring their 2d look to reality

It's a good plan for milking oilers. I've often seen people do subathon/donothon after/before getting a new model
If Vei herself doesn't post "this cost me 15k, please help", but the rigger posts "I charged 15k", then it doesn't make it look like she's begging. But it's a way of priming the pump to get some big spenders wanting to help look after their lovely online uwu coomergirl

It isn't about getting the exact look. You can get a "close enough" look with good painted textures, and proper materials/shaders, especially if you self-host in UE5. 99.9% of viewers wont care.

The point is you shouldn't be hammering in the screw when you have other tools available.

All of this pseud practical thinking comes from the scary pricetag.
I have spent half a year on a few seconds on animation before, and getting a minute of anime quality animation will cost you 15K
This is a situation where you are not a consumer thinking how to cut corner, but an artist thinking how to make something good.
This is an iconic lookin model that would serve her for her whole career. This is well worth it.
