In my opinion the "golden age" was when you could reference a board meme or event from like 2 weeks ago and people actually knew what it meant. Also when the board wasn't filled with the same handful of threads with the same replies every day. E.g.

You have people calling out bait threads, or providing an archive screenshot of the exact same drama thread being made every day, and yet those posts are ignored and the thread farms replies. Bait in many generals gets no (You)s, but a random thread made with that same text gets dozens. Slower generals need to merge or get bumped frequently just to keep them in the catalog.
