For those of us who weren't there, what was it like in 2017 or so when the early vtubing scene took off

>> No.20092760

Let's see:

I saw the first kizuna ai debut cause some shitposting page in facebook told me about it. I loved the first video but it wasn't to get me deep into it until one day I watched a clip of Kizuna and Mirai Akari show up and the tits got me hooked into watching more clips until one day I was only exclusively watching cute japanese girls doing cute things. Months pass, Years pass and here we are in the current timeline.

literally nobody can give you the answer to this question or would want to

Early kizuna ai was entirely about the novelty (think Hatsune Miku 2), and not live. It was a completely different experience.

I think the best way to describe it would be "Feverish".
People had no idea where this would go but they were anxious to discover to see anyway.
A very amusing sub aspect was "is she actually playing or is a man playing for her?" Turns out there's a fair amount of girls who can play video games in a decent-ish way.

they did livestreaming and yuri eigyou before it was cool

>> No.20093964

Back then you could add subtitles to other people's videos, people would translate entire Kizuna vids.

There was uncommon, legitimate confusion among dumbdumbs if Kizuna was an actual AI.

>> No.20094006

it was fine, back then the general idea was more about an actual anime character having a youtube channel rather than a person presenting themselves with an anime avatar.
It was maybe more generic and cookie cutter than it is now but there was an appeal to that too.
The biggest reason people watched was because it was novelty and there was mistery as to how it worked, if there was an actual person controlling it etc.

I only managed to discover Kizuna Ai because Etika mentioned her on one of his streams. At that time, she only had 300 subscribers and 4 videos posted. She ended blowing up 2 weeks later with 100k subscribers and kept increasing rapidly.

There was orders of magnitude less content but it was both better and more accessible. Lots of scripted content that was studiously translated. Still all my love to Eilene and her family.

You definitely had Kizuna tribalfags who insisted she was the only real vtuber. And when Niji debuted their first fans were the test model for today's tribalfagging.

>> No.20099766

The tribalfagging wasnt nearly as bad as it is today.

You had enough time to watch many many of them , also videos of 12h where not even rare, they where nearly non-existant. It was prerecorded videos not streams and it was a way smaller world.

Kizuna was ok but didn't make me bit the vtuber bullet enough, it was a combination of Siro and Kaguya Luna.

I started watching Nekomiya Hinata the FPS cat because her videos were entertaining and fully subbed. I really enjoyed her and eventually joined her discord, and then found out about Pekora through their collaboration and I've been a Hololive fan since. Times were much more relaxed and I much prefer the video style instead of endless long streams I can't catch the full length of. I really feel bad for her and how bad the rest of her friends fell from popularity

it was fun! I really loved Kizuna Ai and Kaguya Luna, but also the vtubers who played battle royale games that came out in 2018 were good too.
here's some quick examples

https://youtu.be/MULPV6jDSII

My friends and I watched most of the Virtual-san wa Miteiru cast members before that show aired, so it was cool at the time (despite that show being a hell show)

At the time I thought Kizuna was the only real vtuber and everyone else was just ripping her off.
