What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

>Vtubing as a male is essentially a niche within a niche.
>That "broad audience" is very, very anti-Vtuber and anti-weeb in general.
This is where you're wrong. The "broad audience" doesn't give a shit about vtubers or weebs. You only think this because you're a 30 something millennial who grew up when being a weeb was looked down upon. Times have changed since then and weebs are well accepted now.

The "niche within a niche" thing is also stupid because it implies that you're only streaming for a specific audience, male viewers who want to watch male vtubers. That's a retarded take. You're nothing more than a streamer, being a male chuuba isn't special. Make content that has wide appeal and you'll get a wide audience.

Look at Admiral Bahroo. Faceless no cam streamer for years and made Partner long ago. Became a vtuber and nothing happened to his numbers. Still gets the same 5 digit crowd he used to. Make good content. Stop thinking you're special just because you have a shitty drawn male character on screen.

Sounds like he just kept his non-vtuber audience btw. I'm fairly sure his point is that normies won't give a chance to unknown male chuubas since the avatar itself is a big part of the attraction. No matter what you pick as your avatar, you'll be filtering someone, while you could be playing the exact same game and making the exact same commentary without one and avoid the debuff.

But again /asp/ is filled with people insisting on trying to push a square peg into a round hole, then turnign around and complaining about it. I'm sure listening to the crab mentality chuubas is going to help more than the actual viewers. :^)

No, I think so because I watch almost exclusively cam streamers and every single time a Vtuber or any non-mainstream-shounen anime character shows up on stream, chat loses their collective shit. I've seen them watch clips that chat would normally find funny but the pure fact it's a Vtuber is talking, they're immediately turned off by it and start talking shit.

Because the majority of males create cringe content that no one gives a shit about. You think people want to watch generic male model in a suit #82 say "ara ara" in a forced voice? Stop making cringe content and start making good content that has broader appeal.

What should my avatar look like? Do I go all in and design an OC, or should I play it safe and dress a generic anime thot in some vaguely related accessories?

Was I wrong to assume that doing both would appeal to a bigger crowd? What's the catch here?

Yeah, just like that!

This.
I essentially just did this and wiggle videos and model reveal and networking.
I think the buff interactive game helped too.

phoneposting so I can't make a compilation image but even amongst /here/s there's some nice vroids
pickychannel is a VRoid modeler who has helped polish a couple of other people's models like eira woolcott and spike_ad. picky's model I don't think most would expect to be in VRoid in the first place but she did a good job with the program. spike's model is of a British punk so it stands out on that front as opposed to "anime VRoid guy" and eira's model is cute
goldenkenji is another vroid artist who has made a bunch of alternate outfits and edits to his model; picrel is something he made a while ago for his nocturne streams. he's also the one who modeled bodega rat, elliott ambers, and professor bloom
there's also raelhungry who has made her own model and meat/meatscave's model

don't know any of those names but i'll check them out. thanks anon!

you should be able to find most of them on twitch or Twitter just by Google searching their names, though I know Bloom is a bit trick if you don't go to his channel directly which is ProfBloomVtuber
best of luck with your VRoid endeavors!

I'm thinking of going the youtube -> twitch path. I really don't feel like streaming that often and want to focus on weekly anime manga reviews or video essays.
Would the normal networking method also work for this type of content creator even though they don't normally stream? Also should I still put "vtuber" on my twitter handle?

That's a good path, still remember to do some light streaming reps but building audience that way has helped streamers like Kabhaa

No one was saying she wasn't, just that 95% of them were gifted from what were most likely existing viewers, not new ones.

Trying to process all the arguing that has happened and trying to add my own.

>30 year old male trying to chuuba
>no incentive for making it "big" but big enough to have fun (10-50 CCV)
>doesn't care whether he uses male or female model but wouldn't do fujobait male or fat tiddy sexualized female character
>can't sing etc. loves playing older games and talking about it review style (overanalyzing while playing, being critical, playing unique games to appreciate game design)
>heavy emphasis on OST analysis too because guitar player and passionate about composition
>still a 2view

I believe I'm not very unique in what i do, but there is an audience for "chill stream vibes and actually talking about games" (like every other male 2view streamer). Playing older games people love always gets a couple people joining and talk about why they love it. They usually don't come back after i finished said game, but it's always fun interactions. I'd like to think they are just other 30 year old males or similar and definitely a minority of the possible viewerbase. I don't think you'd be able to get more of those people to click your stream directly by doing funny meme clips on tiktok. But if i grow in general it increases visibility (also to these people). I think it's inappropriate for me to have an "ara-ara" redeem or start randomly singing or whatever, but I don't think i need to do the chuuba shtick live. Even if blowing up isn't my main goal and gets a lot of people on my stream that i probably don't resonate with, people will just leave once they see the content is not for them and a core audience can form out of that explosion.

Maybe my target audience doesn't care about chuuba meme content for funny zoomies, but leveraging those to increase your visibility will get more of the people you want to click on you, afterall you can filter them on your stream anyways. But even based weeb gaymer boomers usually just click on what has the most views.

I'm plagued with a lot of debuffs, I'd probably have the best chances getting a fujobait model and start singing with my low voice, but i think others do that better than me. I have joked with friends before that I'm basically offering them a way to fall asleep better, by calming them with my ramblings and maybe that js a little self-deprecating but maybe it's not all that bad.

The issue is you have no method of growth. Everyone needs one, whether it be networking, tiktok, youtube, art, memes, singing, etc. Your issue is that you lack one, so your only way to get viewers is by the 1 or two that trickle into your category because they like the game you're playing but never return because they only care for that game.

This isn't exclusive to you, it's a trap most streamers get stuck in because they don't know how to grow to capitalize on their strengths and think they'll just keep going live and getting these viewers. Without a way to capitalize and spread your "chill streamer vibes" content then you'll never actually grow.

This i am aware of and it's where i currently stand. Using sources to get clicks from even if it's not your main content is important and i will try to find something i enjoy doing outside if streaming.

I've been trying to get somewhere on twitter and i think i want to do youtube videos (again) i just have to try to find stuff to make. It's a slow and hard road to get out of your comfort zone, but even if you don't see any success at the end of the day, this hobby can at least turn you into a better person, or worse apparently if you get too popular...

if i want more traction, then should i make gun/hunting/outdoorsy videos on youtube to pull viewers to watch my stream? it's the kind of content i want to make but i don't know how well it will attract potential viewers to my livestreams

>> No.20002011

A potential issue with content too far out of the sphere of "Ah, yes. An anime character is fine." is the fact by making that kind of content you're now trying to advertise to "people who don't mind an anime character but also love the great outdoors and camping enough to seek out videos of it" which likely isn't very large.

That's just my take on it, but if the worst that can come of it is a bit of wasted time, I think you should still go for it just keep that in mind. One of those military-LARP vtuber girls (whiskey or rye or something) does MRE and airsoft "gun" stripping so there is some audience out there.
