there seems to be a lot of debate about what works best and it probably varies from person to person. in my opinion the most important thing for enjoying spatialized sound effects is going to be a smooth upper midrange and treble response, whatever happens to sound natural to you (and opinions vary about that too). the question of open or closed probably depends on how much background noise you have in your room. for ASMR i use multi-driver balanced armature IEMs because i like the sound isolation and the spatial sound effects sound natural to me, but it may be different for you. for music i use a few different pairs of headphones, some dynamic and some planar, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but i don't think there is anything inherent to planar drivers that is likely to make them better or worse for ASMR in general.

when i went back later to listen for it, her heartbeat was definitely audible, but during the live stream i didn't have the volume up high enough because it would have made the rest of the stream uncomfortably loud. so i think improving on that is mostly going to be a matter of making it louder in the stream audio, because it was very quiet, and a lot of what did come through is well below 20 Hz so no one can hear it. someone mentioned in global last night that the best way to pick it up would be to use a stethoscope and put it into the 3DIO's ears, which makes some sense.

I stuck with a portable DAC on my laptop instead of my normal setup so I could listen to the stream from bed with the lights off, it's maximum relaxing that way. Thankfully the DAC includes a bass boost switch too so I worked really well. I'll probably experiment with some IEMs too. I normally use some planars with a huge soundstage which is nice since you can feel the response on the outside of your ears, but I'd like to see what it's like with the sound origination more towards the center of the head.

i had it up on my aeon 2 opens earlier and it's not bad, even though they sound pretty narrow compared to most open sets. because of the bass response on them, the heartbeat is a lot more audible, but it's not much of an improvement overall because it also emphasizes a lot of the low-frequency proximity/popping/vibration in the rest of the stream.

the spatial effect is definitely better on my k702s, but they let in a lot of outside sound, and i can hear my own PC leaking in, though not quite as loud as hers is in the stream. with their bass rolloff everything else sounds better, but the heartbeat is quieter. i guess you can't have it all.
