I basically got too comfortable with what I did know and stopped pursuing further. The barrier for me is written vs. spoken and basically my autism. I want to be able to read fluently, but when I realized 0% of those skills transfer to speech I thought I could no longer even use the excuse of my autistic pursuit having a side-benefit. Plus, I'm frankly not that motivated to learn a language as its dying...like imagine learning Japanese to understand vtubers, half the words they say aren't Japanese and the rest are simple. They also translate a lot of stuff. If I learn Japanese it's because I want to read real Japanese stuff that young Japanese people themselves can't, like 1000 year-old poetry or something.

I want to learn German and Japanese, I'm pretty far into learning Japanese vocab and shit but I can't get past the fundamental gap of not being able to think in another language. Do you think doing that in German would suddenly make Japanese much easier? For German, all my ancestors are German, growing up I couldn't understand what people said at family gatherings because my parents didn't want to pass on the language and would instead speak in it to each other so we couldn't eavesdrop. I'm a bit rusty on no longer hearing it spoken every day but I feel like I probably have some entry point, though it was a German dialect so maybe that's useless.

I don't think that could ever work as a main motivator but more of something extra you could do from acquiring the knowledge, I started because there are a multitude of media that I like that is never going to get translated like old games and VNs, anime and manga were a side thing, and when I got interested in vtubers I was already learning so it was an extra for me.

German is closely related to English historically, with the vast majority of everyday English vocabulary being Germanic in origin and the syntax being unmistakably Germanic. However, due to the way history panned out, English became so thoroughly Latinized (by way of French) that when you actually need to convey complex ideas, you end up using mostly Latin vocabulary to communicate.

I'll never believe this arbitrary ranking, Hindi is at least as difficult for English speakers as Japanese, possibly even more so. Probably the only reason Japanese is in category 5 is because "the kanji, there are SOOO many of them", but not even Japanese people memorize them all. you kinda have to mentally throw out the idea that the sounds a letter uses makes a word
and sort of make this concept that a words pronunciation doesnt rely on how its spelt

sort of like how silent letters work in english, everyone spells them with the silent letter but the pronunciation is different
pneumonia has a P in it but its said 'neu mon ia'
Wednesday is pronounced 'wensday' but is spelled 'wed nes day'
hell fucking xylophone is pronounced with a 'zai' in it

people have learned to mentally separate the way a word is said from the way the spelling tells you how you *should* pronounce it

just because the letter C is in a word doesnt mean the word is always pronounced 'see' in the reading
