What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

What's everybody's take on stream overlays? Especially complicated ones.

None of my favorite vtubers use them but like, every other streamer in the world does so are they worth using or no?

>> No.1711074

>>1710986
You'll have to be more specific. Do you mean that the VTubers you watch are just gameplay with the avatars in the corner over top, instead of there being dedicated space for chat/etc.?

>> No.1711100

>>1710986
I think it's more so for art streamers rather than video game streamers. Video game streamers would rather people focus on the game as well as get those sick clips to be posted on youtube. An overlay would not look good in a youtube video.

>donations goal meter

>> No.1711598

>>1711136
It really depends on the type of content and environment you want to cultivate. Big name streamers generally don't show chat on screen due to how fast it can get and/or because they don't react to it as much as smaller streamers. The same kind of relationship exists in regards to showing recent subs/donations/etc. In general, anyone with a < 500 live view count should be putting all that on screen in an overlay of some fashion. Why? Because it encourages people to interact with you and your stream more. You don't have to devote huge amounts of space to it all either. Even a simple small box above your head for chat and maybe an event list/alert box off to the bottom somewhere is all you really need.

Overlays can also be a fun tool when mixed with creativity and stuff like triggerfyre. For example, I have an automatic channel point redeem (twitch) to fire off a bit of confetti complete with noise. It's on a cooldown to prevent, of course.

As >>1711534 says, you don't have to put every widget from Streamlabs on your overlay. Just what you find important.

numbers don't matter until they actually debut, twitter followers don't translate to returning
and active viewers.

i'm looking at Ace Fortune's twitter feed, and even if we just compare the two, Ace's is just retweets of holos and shit. looks like he took a long break too. Mizuno's at least putting out his own content with his character and collecting views that way and not just retweeting others.

this is just a vague general advice, but if i were ask for a character design around an Otter or Stoat, and wanted to incorporate aspects of an animal like that into a character design, what would you do?

Holy shit, this is right up my alley. I've already designed an otter vtuber for someone else and my college illustration concentration was all on mustelids, my favorite animals.

I personally prefer stoats which would be be best for lolis, given how small and hyper they are (and also male stoats rape baby stoats and the baby stoats hold the sperm in their bodies until they're ready to have kits). A stoat's most notable feature is its white stomach, so something that exposes the stomach would be good. Stoats are ground mammals so having some sort of digging motif would help, like garden gloves, a spade or shovel, dirt smudges, maybe even a miner hat. Hyperactive personality is a must. If digging isn't appealing to you, stoats are also notorious hunters, so if you want maybe a posh English hunter motif, or a woodsy outdoorsman- there are many variants if you'd like.
Short hair would work best for these animals since they tend to have shorter fur, and I think it'd make it more recognizable as a stoat. With the stoat, it could be fun to give her a second outfit that has white and black fur like a stoat's winter coat.

As for otters, aquatic is definitely the key thing to focus on. I'm assuming you're going for sea otter and not river otter, so with sea otters you'll want something more low energy and soft looking. Slow, fluffy, and most likely something with shells. A profession that would work with them would be maybe a sushi chef, a fisherman, or a cruise ship captain. Something to do with the ocean or water in general. Black gloves for their paws.

My favorite mustelid is the pine marten and mink, if you want ideas on that as well.

>> No.1724213

>>1724043

I didnt do png drop, or any of that TBA garbage, I just got a rigged model and started streaming, and I was using twitter from day one trying to reply/comment to other small vtubers I liked.

My first two months I was streaming to my one IRL friend that mods for me. There would be 1 or 2 stragglers per stream that dropped by, lurked, and left without commenting. This was the hardest part, I wanted to quit every day of this phase.

After 2 months I got my first raid from one of the vtubers I was chatting up on twitter, that got me from like 15 subs to close to 50, but just shy of affiliate. One of those raiders was a fairly big vtuber I guess, and that person raided me a few days later and I bounced hard. That week I shot up to 700 twitch followers, I still remember how happy I was.

The one thing I took away from my vtubing experience is that the whole thing is very peaky. You feel like you're getting nowhere, then suddenly you have this huge growth spurt, then back to nothing.

I'm not gonna say that everyone is gonna make it, most wont and I will probably just fizzle out at some point. But periods of low growth aren't abnormal. That's probably how it is for everyone. Don't quit just because you've hit a slump, if you like streaming and vtubing fight through it. I would only quit if you just didn't like it at all anymore.

Honestly having something you are super passionate about and can rant at length on is good for streaming, so I suggest everyone think about what their favourite things are that they love to talk about. In my case its alcohol, though, so not as cute a discussion as that anon.

My primary drink category is scotch, though lately I've been delving into good tequilas and mezcals, which are amazing. I just want to try all the different types of alcohol in the world, and discuss it with people. It's such fascinating subject and part of human history, but much of society just brushes it off as "you alcoholics just want to get drunk all day". I had a glass of Abelour A'bunadh yesterday and it had so many flavours in it that it was like eating a 12 course meal. I'm not some elitist though, I'd have no problem trying a white claw or some shit, I just doubt there'd be anything to discuss in such cases. People are free to enjoy what they like.

Maybe try some ice water between drinks. Something to neutralize the flavour so you can start off fresh each time. Also helps prevent dehydration from drinking a lot. Good idea though.

watching the 3 hour video with codemiko this is what i pulled from it

Questions to ask:
1 - what do you want before you die? (what's your vision for this project)
2 - why did you decide to create this character?
3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)
6 - is the brand you are building something that makes you happy? (do you have a plan to get there? begin with the end in mind)

Notes and Comments
- consistency, showing up everyday is how to make it work (only you can make your content)
- set your targets realistically (1000 to 2000 followers is a 100% growth rate, that's kinda crazy)
- controlling for various factors, men have it much easier on twitch than females
- for every1 viewer on twitch, there are 200 on youtube

- it's super easy for anyone to just launch OBS and stream. just doing the same thing won't work. you have to keep growing. best content creators are constantly looking for something new (and this takes a lot of effort)
- go back to your VODs and watch them. are you the type of streamer that you'd watch? (important mindset)

- luck doesn't exist
(Miko got a huge surge of followers when she got raided. might attribute it to the raid, but it was because she was creating unique and attractive content that caught the attention of a larger streamer, that isn't luck)

- go for the zoomershit thumbnails and titles

more Brand Management related:
-Youtube and Patreon are where you will get the most growth, Twitch requires you to be live and streaming, YT and Patreon will keep making money while you are offline
- don't look at twitch as where you brand will live, it's just a platform for live streaming
- Patreon is about selling ACCESS to you, but you need to offer rewards that don't eat up more of your time
- as a content creator, you job is to make content, so as you grow, hire people and delegate all parts of the job that don't involve creating content. (if it takes you 1 hour to manage social media or stitch together a highlight reel, that's 1 hour you're not creating)

You need passive growth. Youtube is more or less the only game in town for passive growth. If you focus only on active growth(shilling yourself on twitter, reddit, or here on /wvt/) you will burn yourself out best case, worst case you'll turn into a fucking vtweeter.

If you take away nothing else, understand this: streaming on twitch is not a method for growth. If you do NOTHING but stream on twitch 7 days a week for 8 hours a day, you will never grow past 10 viewers, if that. It will not happen.

The number one thing you need to obsess about as a vtuber is active and passive methods for viewership growth.

Make snappy, well-edited videos that showcase your charm and talents and upload them to youtube. Over the course of 3 years, each of those videos will give you 1-5 passive twitch subs per month. If it goes viral you'll get like 1k+ in the blink of an eye.

Engage on /wvt/, twitter, reddit WITHIN REASON. limit yourself to 30 minutes max for active social media shilling, networking, whatever you want to call it, PER DAY. Focus on content creation first and foremost.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUTUBE, EVEN THOUGH TWITCH IS THE SUPERIOR STREAMING PLATFORM.

>> No.1757432

>> No.1757439

>>1757117
It's simple really. I've said this before many times, to the point I wish someone would put it in the damn OP.

>Point 1: Until/Unless YouTube updates their livestreaming, you should only use it for VOD storage. Similarly, you should not use Twitch for VOD storage.

Hololive and other big VTubers can stream on YouTube because people know them and will subscribe (i.e. follow) them. Finding livestreamers on YouTube is a big fucking headache, not to mention their algorithm for recommendations has never been good.

Twitch makes you more discoverable and allows for better viewer interaction. Bits started as a meme but viewers now are just as likely to drop big bit bombs as they are a bunch of gifted subs. Channel Points, when used correctly for things like overlay triggers, "streamer punishments", and poll betting, *increases* your interaction with the viewer. The downside to Twitch is its retarded takes on DMCA and the lack of meaningful VOD storage. So again, stream on Twitch, VOD on YouTube.

>Point 2: People know when you're number chasing

If you're clickbaiting and otherwise spamming hashtags instead of providing meaningful content, all you're doing is sustaining on outrage/coomer culture. The instant you stop doing so, your numbers will plummet. Yes, you should provide some cool gimmick or something special to your viewers. But if all you're doing is bouncing virtual tits around and yelling at that domo faggot on Twitter, you're not going to get more views/interaction. Not the kind you want, anyways.

>Point 3: Don't go into streaming expecting to make bank. Treat it like a hobby and not like a job.

Unless/Until you "make it big", livestreaming of any kind should be something you do as a hobby. I see so many people getting into it thinking they'll make a big return on whatever they invest into making content. The "do your reps" meme is a fucking meme but it's true. You're not going to be getting ANY return on your invested time/effort/cash/etc. for quite some time. If at all. For VTubers it's getting to the point where everyone peacocks around by throwing stupid amounts of cash to get these elaborate Live2D models done by "top names". The thinking being that expensive equipment/model = more views is a common one that leads to many a graduation/VTweeter.

>>1757362 largely has good points as well. However, I would comment on the thinking that "streaming on twitch isn't a method for growth." By itself, meaning you're doing absolutely nothing else in terms of growth, yes, it's not worth it. What people care about is consistency. The old adage of showing up on time and consistently being 90% (or w/e) of a job is true. Set a schedule and stick to it. Deviate only when necessary.

Getting new viewers using youtube and twitter means nothing if those viewers forget about you because your streams pop up randomly at all hours of the day, or fall off a cliff for weeks at a time.

Absolutely no one is going to sit down and watch some indie chuuba play 4 hours of legend of zelda, but they might watch a 10 minute highlight video with a nice title and clean thumbnail on their commute to work or during their lunch break. You need to turn those passive casual viewers into active watchers on your livestream by showing your best foot with edited content. Remember that your competition as an indie isn't just other indies it's also people in Hololive, Nijisanji, VOMs, and even non-vtuber streamers. Let's take the video that spawned this whole thing for example. It's 30 fucking minutes long. Yet all it took for me to get the important parts was skipping around intelligently for about 2 minutes. If he'd cut it down into fast bullet points for a sub 5 minute video, he'd ironically get more views. There's some merit in his advice. I dont think affiliate will do anything for a vtuber that's under 10 average viewers per stream. At 10 you'll start to have a chance at a monthly pay out. It's when you break 20-30 average viewers that affiliate will be worth it. If you join the affiliate program as soon as twitch offers it to you, expect to sink from 30 to 100 dollars in sub badges, emotes, etc etc. It's more money spent out of pocket that you won't see an immediate return on yet because you won't get $100 worth of subs and bits for a few months yet.

The popper is just a green-screened confetti video that's overlayed over top everything else in OBS and set up to auto-trigger on redeem with Triggerfyre. Lasts maybe 7 seconds. Seems simple? That's because it is. The viewers love it and have even started their own memes about it.

Other popular redeems are kind of tabletop-specific so likely wouldn't help you out.

honestly I've been having trouble figuring out what to do for point redeems.
most of them are stuff that are fairly in character like "go into an impromptu lecture" or "do a fortune reading" or the generic ones like "posture/hydration check" but I really don't know what makes for interesting redeems to viewers

>> No.1758914

could do drawing redeems, even if you aren't an artist, some viewers will get a kick out of a shitty doodle

YMMV but for me it's gonna revolve around points that bring people to my streams in the first place. if they like my rants, maybe redeem for a micro rant about a specified topic. if they like my instrument playing, maybe bang out a solo for a high point redeem. if they're there because my avatar is hot, maybe a temporary lewd costume or changing into something more revealing with an extremely high redeem. small ones should be very quick to resolve and preferably passive such that they don't detract from the stream, since they'll be happening a lot. emote editing also great

You could do something simple like have an OBS effect that makes your head fat or let twitch or BTTV emotes appear and fade out really quickly somewhere randomly on the stream.

First of all, I haven't really thought about this that much because I literally just woke up today with this idea in my head. But I guess the vibe I would go for would be
>earnest but sometimes unintentionally goofy
>non-competitive vidya like strategy games or older RPGs
>singing ok
>drawing
>strongfat avatar with stubble
>gimmick would be being a "strict" daddy type who can't help spoiling the viewers anyway

>> No.1762375

So there's a slightly similar concept that exploded recently, look up ugly bastard project on twitter. Mother fucker got an immediate collab with merryweather as soon as he unveiled his model and he exploded on twitter.

I'm imagining something like brian from dream daddy? There's past precedent for fat/thick male vtubers gaining early traction, but I suspect that's mostly because of novelty. There are too many horny twink male vtubers with shit voices. So much so that a fat bastard stands out and gains the likes/follows lol.

We've yet to see one actually maintain a stream with more than 50 average viewers. Ugly bastard is floating around 20-30 right now.
