I cant really speak into why pepole are into shipping, but i dont particularly mind if its nijisanji. For a lot of pepole watching vtubers feels more like being around a group of friend than an intimate date. A lot of the niji audience tends to be balanced pepole with or without intimate relationships. Wich is why they avoid and filter threads like this.
It filled the niche of a more casual environement. Hololive on the other hand ? Perhaps its not a good move if they decide to mix them up and interact in a non professional setting. I dont know if its quite right to give contempt to pepole who use vtubers as a way of geting feelings of romantic companionship. If it makes them happy and life has been hard for them then so be it. Some might call that pathetic or entiteled but it probably dosen't make their sadness go away.

Not really most male livers have overwhelming male viewership or are pretty balanced, only a few have more female viewership (curiously enough those also tend to be among the least popular males) but in general it's mostly males watching Nijimales, and I'm pretty sure the situation is similar in the overseas branches.
NijiEN seems to be the exception tho, as Luxiem does seem to lean more towards female viewership than male ones (which isn't surprisimg once you think about it) though I dunno by how much.
