I've wanted to be a youtuber. There's a specific niche content I think I could fill so I wouldn't be trying to compete with anyone huge or anything. And I don't want to show my face so using a character drawing to speak through seemed like a good idea, many successful channels have done this before vtubers were a thing at all. I thought about it but I don't have a desk, a proper chair, or a stand microphone, so I cant even start to think about it. Not only that but if I wanted to do the Vtuber thing I would need to commission an avatar, And then learn how to use whatever streaming software. After that I'm not an idiot so I would build a separate computer so there's no chance of me accidentally opening something I shouldn't (I know I could multiboot a pc but this way there will be no issue) and then start a new steam account and discord account so I can buy games to play without it tracing to me.

Luckily I have nothing on the internet that can be traced to me because I'm not a content creator in any way, so I wouldn't need to scrub anything.

I've thought about it a lot. I used to stream erratically a bit, having a model that can react without having to show my actual face would be nice. But every time I think about going and getting a commission done I keep thinking of how I'll have to have nearly everything redone. OBS is a free recording software you can use. if you can't livestream, don't stress, you can simply do local recordings and upload them to youtube as time allows. the biggest thing is to figure out what type of entertainer you've got inside you.

do things that make you happy and that you enjoy. don't be silent, just talk about things. make up shit if you have to like "now, chat, i know you're asking why i'm doing this, but let me show you.." stuff like that.

Don't worry about it. Most independent Western vtubers just mindlessly copy Hololive's model without thinking about why they do it (for instance insisting on having a low-effort debut stream where they just dub over a powerpoint about themselves, doing karaoke streams even if they can't sing, and going out of their way to set up collabs and form cliques). Vtubing is essentially just streaming, so it's better to work on that and not get tangled up in the meta of being a vtuber.
Even among Hololive talents, backstory and character setting stops mattering as soon as their debut stream ends, and if they are forcing a personality it tends to slowly revert to their normal self over time. Like how Haachama started off trying to be a tsundere, but that facade eventually fell away to reveal the batshit insane zoomer that she is.
Just be yourself. Sincerity is inherently attractive and impossible to fake.

You don't need a backstory. Your avatar can just be an avatar if you want.
But if you do decide to make it an actual character, don't choose traits that you can't keep up for hours every day. Like don't make a character that's smug and confident if you're naturally quiet and reserved. It'll come across as obviously fake and you'll burn yourself out trying to play a character that's completely different from your normal self. Just exaggerate things that are already part of your actual personality.

I think I'll try it once I'm not moving around so much and have a stable schedule. I'm not set on an avatar, but I've got a good friend who's talented at 3D modeling. I know I want to use a voice filter to recreate aircraft radio chatter. Nothing too heavy that affects clarity, though. As for the amount of people that would be interested in your content, Twitch does have a Programming tag that sees plenty of use and there are people who pretty much only stream that. The midget now known as Michael Reeves used to do a programming tutorials and not only were they very entertaining but also very easy to understand (I'm sure the humour aided in the digestion of information). I'm not deep into programming or computer-related stuff, but I haven't seen many people make videos on those topics where they are good teachers AND entertainers.
