Serious answer: because through translated media they acquired a love, fascination, or appreciation for one or more chubas, and thus then, where before there might not have been much 'in itself' to hold attention to a stream one is not fluent it, because it is the person they are interested in, simply watching them do stuff and picking up context clues here and there is suddenly more compelling.

I watch to learn Japanese. It's standart culture immersion for learning languages, nothing special and nothing wrong with it. However I try to not look at other eops because their comments makes me cringe and angry.

It's more on quality of the tvuber's content and personal preference.
I like nui because she gets attached to any RPG she plays, she would roleplay in those games, would be interested in the lore and would thoroughly read in-game lore text. I haven't seen anyone else(EN vtuber) with that kind of interest in games. But I only watch her casually due to my eop limits.

There are hundreds of clips to watch of well known Japanese vtubers, even an EOP could start there and get most of the important context. Besides, western vtubers suck so there isn't much choice for EOPs then to go elsewhere.

i started learning English to read manga and vn and once i got to a level of reading and listening that was as effortless as my native language i noticed i missed the feeling of learning a language.
so i started japanese. seeing your comprehension increase with time and your vocabulary is a nice feel especially in the beginning when you make a lot of progress fast. that's probably where all those polyglots come from.
