Mumei elaborated that while they can still do unarchived karaoke, they will need to find acoustic tracks for the songs they sing in unarchived karaoke streams. Since it's hard to do so (according to her), it will limit their options by quite a lot (so far, most Holos just use Youtube videos as background tracks). I doubt Cover randomly decided that Holos need to change their ways, so something probably happened. Either YT decided to tighten their rules or Cover got a warning from other parties.

some of those karaoke tracks on yt are illegal uploads from karaoke dvds/bd. it can get real dicey if they're doing quick searches and clicking on random videos.
the other source of backing tracks are uploads from people doing instrumental covers (they own the mechanical rights of the recording) and they can invoke an auto-block in the content id system. maybe there's a change in how that system work for live stream?
i know there were at least 2 holo karaoke streams that got auto-blocked by toy's factory (unison square garden's label) but it only blocked them after the stream was done.
then there's the incident with reflect getting claimed by some douche that did a real lazy remix of it.

From the EN side of things, it's more of a Holo/Vshojo duopoly with the split being YouTube/Twitch. No offense to nijifriends.
It's just that the EN market is much smaller than the Japanese market so there's not much room to grow. The big HoloENs and Vshojos all average about 10k each if we ignore Gura as the outlier.

If we think about the JP side of things? I'm not seeing any challengers there and I think it's more likely that someone will overtake Holos/Nijis after they've lost popularity and move onto the sunset era of their existence rather than some new company just straight up mogging them at their peak.
