Essentially, VShojo has been dealing with a cybersecurity threat for a while now, involving doxxing. They'd even got the police involved, and an investigation was ongoing. One week in October, the threat decided to target people outside of established talent. It lasted a week, and only got two people. Likely because it was so limited in impact and solved so quickly, VShojo does not issue a PSA, instead trying to catch the culprits.
One of the victims was a small VTuber called Sakii Nightshade. She's trying to apply, and the phishing led to a swatting. She tried to tell VShojo about it over Discord. These messages did not get a response, and she assumed the worst. (Turns out her client didn't actually send those messages, and VShojo does not employ psychics yet)
The other was a… charming fellow named Nux. Nux's previous involvement with VShojo's sphere of influence mostly involved sending them huge donations to watch shocking videos, or do shocking things, which he'd then clip, edit, and make content out of, without permission or subsequent feedback from the people in the video.
So, Nux gets phished by a group of doxxers. He doesn't fall for it, but he smells C O N T E N T. He contacts the other phishing victim, who's still under the impression that VShojo ghosted her, and makes a video. Along the way, he seems to get information from a helpful source, leading him right to the culprit, which of course he wants to show to the world. Around the 22nd of November, he's about to release it, and contacts VShojo's management. Not for permission, mind you, but for changes and so that they can make a response. He says he'd give 30 minutes, though he seems to have given more like 3 hours.
VShojo's cybersecurity head essentially tries to tell him off. For one, his culprit? Yeah, that's not one of the doxxers. Not only that, but his source for the culprit? That's probably one of the doxxers. Furthermore, announcing to the world loudly that 'HEY LOOK AT THESE PEOPLE AND THEY'RE SO EASILY DOXXED AND THIS PERSON MANAGED IT' is likely exactly what the doxxers wanted, and if not, it might alert the ring to the ongoing investigation. However, since Nux isn't going to take 'throw this video into a fucking shredder and never speak about it again' as a valid change, they instead ask for minor things and craft a hasty response in their finest corpo-speak.
Nux releases the video. Shortly after, VShojo gives their response, couching 'we had this under control, you know' in nice words and shallow thanks.
Pretty much all the girls are upset about it. After all the shit Nux pulled with donos, and all the shit doxxers have tried to pull with them, now he's alerting the world with false information about the culprit, making it harder to bring the shitheads to justice, and taking credit for it all? Nyan, especially, is livid, because she's been dealing with doxxers for the better part of a decade and has seen the shit Nux had done to her friends. She vents in her supporters-only channel about it, while imploring people not to go after Nux in the way you really can't online.
Someone posts this supporters-only post onto /vt/.
From there it goes to Twitter.

On /vt/, this is used to fit into a narrative. They seize on the lack of a PSA or warning as a sign that VShojo is a black company. I cannot comment on this, because I am scared to ask where the anti-VShojo movement originated.
On Twitter, however, it's a more balanced flame war. For most of VShojo, and even a few beyond, this is the final straw. Dirty laundry comes out. Nux eventually takes the video down and offers an apology, but it's a quite poor one, contradicting what he said in the video, and not actually apologizing for making the damn thing. Even Mel, the one most fond of Nux, and Hime, the member who barely exists, eventually weigh in. Suddenly, the fanbases of both VShojo and Nux have marching orders. Unfortunately, Nux's fanbase significantly overlaps with VSJ's and is far larger. They follow the shrill Sans knockoff. This does not do the girls well.
VShojo deletes their hasty response and posts a better one on Reddit. Turns out the scheme that got Nux did not get 11 other people, and that VShojo is actually trying to get these guys. This investigation had been ongoing since this spring, and they needed the radio silence to catch the fuckers.
Sakii publicly speaks out, saying that VShojo ignored her concerns and Discord messages. Gunrun essentially responds with 'What messages? We never got any. Can you get in touch again?' Turns out that yeah, VShojo never got those messages, and not for lack of trying. Everything got cleared up and Sakii is somewhat at peace.
Nux is not. Instead he goes on an offensive. He posts screenshots of Discord conversations, and a twitter conversation with Snuffy where she essentially said 'I don't hate your guts' after he tried to get her attention with Jake Paul shit. Even showed Gunrun, Mel the cyber guy, and himself in the same conversation, ostensibly talking about the video. (Mel got blurred out later, but of course people could tell) It seemed as though he was trying to make the argument of 'well, they didn't say no…' which sort of worked.
The third response from VShojo was a Medium post by Gunrun himself. He spills a lot more, including far more comprehensive screenshots. Turns out they tried to tell Nux off (in a very limp-dicked and 'polite' manner), but he either did not understand or did not care.
At this point, it's become a war of attrition on Twitter. It's not going to end unless one side surrenders. The girls at VShojo apologize publicly and start to delete their responses, likely wanting to get this shit over with and never think about it again. Tellingly, they did not apologize for their response in general, but only for specifics - at least for now.

Nux is unlikely to be near VShojo again. The investigation is probably set back, too. Like the first World War, nobody really won, but Nux lost worse. Try getting VShojo to make content for you now, asshole.

Some underage faggots from a third-world shithole (Brazil purportedly based on IPs) buy the website vshojo.org, because apparently VShojo didn't.

They send emails to indie vtubers trying to trick them into believing VShojo wants them to join. They send official-looking contracts, from an official-looking email. Textbook phishing.

They phish Sakii Nightshade into giving her personal info, leading to her being doxxed and swatted. They almost get Nux Taku too. Sakii and Nux notify VShojo.

VShojo eventually gets the registrar to revoke the vshojo.org domain, and law enforcement determines which emails were sent from vshojo.org. They confirm the only phishing victims from vshojo.org are Nux and Sakii.

VShojo chooses NOT to put out a PSA about phishers trying to impersonate them for doxxing/swatting. VShojo says the gang doing the doxxing and swatting have also been harassing the VShojo girls for months, and claimed making this public would give them notoriety and potentially embolden them to swat more and harass more.

This was considered a retarded move, because the attackers could just buy new domains like vshojo.co and continue doxxing and swatting. So VShojo didn't really stop the threat, and they had no way of knowing if any more people were attacked until it was too late.

It's not like underage faggots in Brazil were realistically going to be arrested for cybercrime. It's also not like indie vtubers had the resources to fight doxxing and swatting either, and swatting can kill. So this looked more like a move from VShojo to save face that threw indie vtubers under the bus.

Nux does his own investigation, but gets tricked by the attacker like a fucking dumbass, and gets mostly bullshit info. He doesn't realize this.

Nux tells VShojo on Discord he wants to make a video about his experiences. He says the public needs to know (which is fair), but his video ends up containing a shitload of inaccuracies and makes himself look like a hero instead of the dumbass he is.

The VShojo cybersecurity guy warns him that they don't want this to go public for the above reasons. But the guy ends up saying, "I am not saying this as a criticism of whether or not you should do a video, that is entirely your right to do so as a victim and we don't have a problem with that".

This wishy-washy sentence was also considered a retarded move, because it made it unclear whether they were really okay with the video going forward or not. Nux took this as permission as long as he didn't mention any names to give notoriety, but GunRun later ends up saying this wasn't permission.

Nux shows the video to the VShojo cybersecurity guy and requests feedback. He points out issues (e.g. unredacted names, inaccuracies), but Nux only fixes some of them, mostly the redactions. He still believes he wasn't tricked, so he keeps those incorrect parts in the video, like a dumbass.

The cybersecurity guy drafts a VShojo official statement to go along with Nux's video. All through this process, the cybersecurity guy keeps thanking Nux, and calls his video a "public service announcement". The video goes live, and VShojo tweet replies to Nux, publicly thanking him and linking to pic related, which is VShojo's original public statement.

Soon after, Nyanners posts this message to her public Discord, complaining about the video and asking him to take it down.

The summary is that Nux tried to make himself look like a hero in the video when he was really a dumbass, while VShojo tried to throw indie vtubers under the bus to protect their public image.

All they had to do was say this: "Phishers are trying to impersonate us and steal your information. Official Vshojo emails only come from vshojo.com. Email us at [e-mail] to report phishing attempts." They could post it on their website and social media, some youtube news outlets would have picked it up, and word of mouth would have done the rest.

This would fuck up an investigation BUT will solve the problem for a while and give the attackers less victims

Nux asks the Vshojo Cybersecurity (I'll call him Cy for short) if he's allowed to post a video. Cy is pretty much on board with the idea and tells nux that he has the full legal right to make a video about it. This is BEFORE the 30 minute window nux gave. Nux shows these screenshots in his apology.
Nux THEN says "Hey I want to upload this in the next our so if you could take 30 min and go over it and tell me if anything's wrong". Cy says sure no problem might need more time. Nux allows more time. The phrasing of the convo is a "sure no problem" kind and not anybody being pressured or forced. At any time Cy could say "don't upload it we gotta talk to cops/lawyers first" and nux would have backed down. As far as nux is aware, Vshojo is ok with the idea.
Cy makes a few comments and edits such as blurring or rephrasing and Nux edits on the fly with all the changes.

This entire debacle proved that Vshoujo doesn't have any "management".

GunRun claims that indie vtubers were not thrown under the bus, but all he showed was that he took down the vshojo.org domain and that he checked that the only phishing emails from vshojo.org were to Sakii and Nux. He has no way of knowing what other domains were used for phishing, or if the phishing was still going on.

GunRun also claims that VShojo didn't explicitly approve or endorse the video, despite the cybersecurity guy's thankful messages and the VShojo official tweet thanking Nux for it. He claims this was just politeness, misconstrued as approval. He posts the Discord messages showing the other feedback that the cybersecurity guy gave that Nux ignored.

GunRun originally claims that Nux gave them 30 minutes to review the video and draft a statement. A twitter follower points out the timestamps in Nux's apology video show this was really around 3 hours (not a lot, but still more than 30 minutes), and GunRun silently updates the medium post.

The summary is that Nux tried to make himself look like a hero in the video when he was really a dumbass, while VShojo tried to throw indie vtubers under the bus to protect their public image.

All they had to do was say this: "Phishers are trying to impersonate us and steal your information. Official Vshojo emails only come from vshojo.com. Email us at [e-mail] to report phishing attempts." They could post it on their website and social media, some youtube news outlets would have picked it up, and word of mouth would have done the rest.
