He has a point, especially if you shift this into the context of VTubers. If you were an English VTuber in 2020 pre-covid, you hit the gold rush.

I remember seeing an IronMouse video on YouTube pre-covid thinking how annoying she was, and she made it because she was one of the few EN VTubers at the time.

Even back then there were a lot of chuubas floating around (just not as many as now) who were the "stars" at the time because they were early adopters and inspiration to the mid/late 2020 chuubas, and there's people from back then (including those "Stars") that still have lower double digit viewers. Starting early was only a buff longterm if people found you entertaining, Iron Mouse just got her shot at a large audience when Zentreya and Silvervale discovered her, and then an even bigger one when Melody dropped thousands on her during her Twitch debut.

>> No.13466619

>>13466502
but that's really the case with anything. Kuzuha from Nijisanji JP doesn't even know exactly what caused his popularity to explode other than being a half decent Apex vtuber who was very active right when covid hit. Japan goes into lockdown, bunch of teens and twenty somethings play games and discover a decent streamer who is kinda entertaining. but it's not something you can anticipate or plan for.

if ironmouse was streaming for years and decided to just stop. maybe she wouldn't have been discovered a year and a half ago. or maybe she wouldn't have ever been discovered at all. it's all just luck. but you need to play the game for a shot at that luck by streaming and putting yourself out there to maximize the chance of getting noticed.

>> No.13466993

>>13466619
This is a good take. You can't get lucky if you aren't playing the game, but at the same time, hard work doesn't equal success. Don't fall for prosperity gospel nonsense about how people who are successful inherently deserve their success, or are good because they're successful, and people who aren't successful are unsuccessful because they're bad or lazy.

Fortune doesn't discriminate, but you need to be in the game to have a chance. Work hard, obviously, but don't expect that just because you work hard that you'll be successful. IronMouse blew up after years of hard work, but the years of hard work didn't guarantee that success.

But anon, that’s an empty platitude. Life in general is not exactly fair in terms of effort/result ratio.
We’re here to find ways to get better and make it so that as much of our efforts as possible bare fruit. If one follows this “play the game” attitude, you’ll be one of the poor saps grinding twitch 12 hours a day for 2 views.
>>13466502 is right in that successful people are such for a reason.

>If one follows this “play the game” attitude, you’ll be one of the poor saps grinding twitch 12 hours a day for 2 views.
it should be pretty obvious that grinding 12 hour streams a day isn't how one "makes it" and that you need to be doing a lot more. the problem comes in that most of the things that chuubas can do to put their name out there is looked down upon because anons are autistic and don't like shilling themselves.

at the risk of starting another timeloop, tiktok is a powerful advertising tool and that's how Nina got into Nijisanji. networking on twitter is important too, but most /asp/ies just use it to chat with their friends. same with chuubas just doing collabs for the sake of collabs, or streaming for the sake of streaming. if you want to make it, you need to take steps that help you make it.

almost every content creator out there repeats the same thing. most of your growth should happen when you're not streaming.

>> No.13467702

>>13467462
>almost every content creator out there repeats the same thing. most of your growth should happen when you're not streaming.

This. I don't know why, but almost no /asp/ies or /wvt/-adjacent chuubas have any decent off-stream content. Youtubes are largely just VOD archives, the few clips they have ware way too long and unedited (even for jumps), don't have edited thumbnails or enticing titles, nothing.

There's this big culture of "fuck clickbait!" or "that's zoomer shit!" or thinking that because they don't fall for thumbnails or titles and heavily curate their content that everyone does. Most people don't, especially most consumers. It's an odd mindset that's hard to break out of or even realize that you have. No one is watching a 3 minute long, unedited clip of you playing phasmo. They want a short clip of you being spooked, or a short clip of you doing something funny. Something representative of your content as a whole.

>> No.13468172

>>13467462
>>13467702
You’re right, but that’s not the issue I had with “just play the game”. The game does involve promoting your content and collabing and all that, and you gotta do that for sure, but people should focus more on figuring out who their streams are for in the first place and how to get those people to watch you.
As per Devin Nash, scarcity is one way of leverage. Although frankly, I’d say it’s always scarcity, difference being if it’s scarcity of exceptional people or of originality.

>> No.13468324

>>13468172
>people should focus more on figuring out who their streams are for in the first place
you can and should do this while you grow. there's no way for you to just think and theorycraft your way into the future. and trying to find the perfect niche for yourself before starting doesn't make sense. your niche might be something that doesn't even exist right now. you'll never know until you actually start streaming and experimenting with different types of content.

you'll have viewers come and go, but that's fine. in the long run, as long as you keep working it and figuring out new things to try, viewers will come along your journey. even old ones who first discovered you might come back a few months later and see how much progress you've made and decide to stick around. or maybe they don't.

there are millions of viewers on twitch and youtube, losing a handful of viewers here and there as you experiment is meaningless in the long run. but figuring out what content you enjoy and comes naturally to you can only be found by getting your hands dirty and streaming.

this is just the game you have to play. a manager would be able to help you figure out exactly what kind of content to posting on various social media sites. as well as keeping track of current trends so that you can hop onto OBS, churn out something in 4-5 takes, and the post it. but indies have to do it on their own. the ones who are smart enough to figure that is how grow will grow, the rest will stagnate because all they do is tweet a schedule and retweet a few things.

a faceless, mute and expressionless character like the robot guy who posted his design in /wvt/ can work in a scripted and pre-written story where character is allowed to develop in context with the plot.

there is no pre-written story or plot when you're streaming video games or art. you can take it all the way to old school recorded youtube skits if you want to roleplay a character but at that point you're not a live streamer.

When you click on the settings button in vtube studio you should see the menu on the top
click the one with the person and gear and on the right you should see all the different properties and what controls them
if you click on input you can choose what controls the labeled feature; in this case you can see that i've highlighted eye X and eye y; if you change the input of eye X to "FaceAngleX" and eye Y to "FaceAngleY" then the eyes will move based on how you tilt your face rather than how you move your eyes

Lore is GREAT... As a framing device. It can be used to tie disparate aspects of your stream together. Perhaps the overlays, or the transitions, or something? So rather than just a random collection of things that look cool, you have hunting equipment themed stuff, or whatever.

It can also be used for what you say/do. So rather than at 'college', you were at 'woodsman school', or 'evil incorporated'

Hell, we might be wrong. There might be a massive audience out there for a chuuba who leans into their lore, plays a full story arc out seriously, and only picks games and themes in line with the character.

But if that's the case, you have to wonder why none of the JP crowd really went into that, other than maybe haachama's arc.

there isn't. vtubing isn't new. it's just streaming. if something like that would have taken off, someone would have done so in the past decade.

at best you have youtube skit creators and storytellers. but you don't see lore heavy live streamers making it big.
>other than maybe haachama's arc.
every lorefag wants to point to this but doesn't realize that this was just a side gimmick that she created while being unable to stream. it wasn't the central focal point of her livestreams and even the easter eggs she put into her minecraft streams were barely callbacks to the lore.

>> No.13520283

>There might be a massive audience out there for a chuuba who leans into their lore, plays a full story arc out seriously, and only picks games and themes in line with the character.
there might be but it would be hard finding that audience from zero because as much as aspiring chuubas want to be Different, people just arent easily drawn in by the unfamiliar no matter how good you are at it. most successful chuubas are slight variations on the same formula - this is whats easily marketable. as someone who wants to do something like that (t. lorefag) im far more concerned with gaining myself solid ground the traditional way before i try to do anything "experimental" or ill just be kneecapping myself. that doesnt mean i wouldnt wanna try it down the line but learn the rules before you break em etc.

no one slightly relevant has done it before basically because of this logic >>13519081 as not only is totally unproven whether theres an audience for it but its also a huge pain in the ass to write a detailed lore/story and ESPECIALLY maintain a constant character act, on top of regular chuuba content creation. putting that much effort into something thats such a needless risk, if your goal is to have a wide audience and be able to support yourself via streaming, is basically anathema for any chuuba who isnt insane. apparently thats me tho and ill readily admit that, but fuck it its for the Art i love being delusional

give me an example of a streamer who currently embodies that. virtual or otherwise. even including tradstreamers like Dr. Disrespect who is playing a character and upping his persona to 11, he's still a streamer first and a character second.

if you want to attribute some weird fetish to being a chuuba, that's up to you. but streaming is still streaming and there are styles that work for growth and styles that don't. this much it is already established and your makebelieve ideas about vtubing doesn't change that.

this is why motivation is useless in the long run. feeling motivated to do something is nice short term, but when it starts getting repetitive and tiring and you wake up and "just don't feel like streaming" they don't have what it takes.

i'd say you better change your approach to only work with chuubas who can demonstrate that they are committed to growth and not just some wealthy kids with their parents money looking to become a vteweeter for a few months.

When I first caught her streams I was already interested but I was in that mindset of "oh yeah there's no way it's going to happen with a fucking streamer," and then I realized she isn't some unobtainable goddess and it's actually pretty easy to talk to her casually outside of streams.
