The rules and all that were fine, but you ended up railroading the players more than you should have. The game is supposed to allow them to create the scenes right? I would understand if they did something game breaking but they were trying to do classic horror movie tropes that you kept nixing. The characters were supposed to find the moth in cabin 2 right? It sounded like they were going to explore that other cabin, but you forced them to go to the van. Then when they were trying to create tension with the van (no one being able to drive, fear that there would be not enough gas to make it to safety) you took that agency away from them too. There were also parts where you described the scene as the DM should, but then forced the players to do a very specific action. Like at the end when they were underground and there you described a draft of air coming from above, that was good. But then you ruined it by immediately

As a DM you need to give the players what they need to know, such as the room description, and then let them think about what to do on their own. Basically the problem that happened was that you kept taking away their agency, which was especially bad since you kept emphasizing that they were supposed to set up the scene due to the nature of the game. Next time make some key plot point ideas and don't be afraid to let the players talk and do things for a bit.
They say the van might not have enough gas to make it through a 5 hour drive? Perfect, you can let them explore the woods and get attacked by the mothman while out on foot. Or the fact that they were all prepared to go
'oh no! none of us know how to drive' was also a perfect set up to let them stay in the area they needed to be in to discover the moth man clues or get attacked. Keeping vague plot points that you adjust around the players is the key to being a good DM.

Yep. If you really REALLY have no room to budge, which you shouldn't, you can do much softer forms of railroading. They investigate every corner of the room and find essentially nothing of consequence, no extra way out, and then you can remind them about things they haven't tried yet. It's something that when used sparingly is detectable as railroading, but isn't really offensive to the players or anyone watching.

Evening all, got something I've been puzzling over and would like some opinions on. With things like gaming streams and song covers, I have a pretty easy time picking out what to clip and how to advertise those streams, but when it comes to reading streams, I feel like it's not as easy to sell. I know reading streams are a bit more limited appeal, but for those who like them, what kinds of clips would make a reading stream attractive to you? For those who don't normally like them, would a compelling clip change your mind about watching one?

I excerpted this out from the end of my reading of Poe's "The Telltale Heart" a little while ago because I was really getting into it, but I don't know if this works well as a clip. Any opinions and feedback are welcome!

I don't really think they're clippable. What would make them clippable is if it's a story you pre-read and did effects/assets for. A lot more work, to be sure, but it would let you put marketable effects on a moment you felt was worth sharing. Takes away from the comfy vibe that a reading stream normally offers, though.
Most clippable moments in games come from the dynamic environment screwing over or surprising the player, and the ensuing reaction. Song covers are "clippable" in their own right as they're content by themselves. Reading is... Neither, by itself anyways.

I appreciate that you were open about it, and you did alright considering the inexperience DMing, despite the criticism.
Besides what the other anons have said, just keep in mind that you and the players are all telling a story together. Build a set for them and let them play with it, and let them analyze and reach their own conclusions unless they specifically ask it of you. It felt to me like you wrote up a lot of descriptive pieces to chain your story together, but I think it helps to do the opposite. Keep the plot points abstract and internalized, and let the description add flavor to the scene the players have already build, rather than use it as an engine to progress the story.
Keep it up and don't be discouraged. It takes a while to get a good feel for DMing but you'll get there with practice. You clearly have a drive for it and that'll carry you forward.

I think you're right. Even climactic scenes like the one I clipped from Poe there are pretty limited appeal. I'll have a better model soon, and that may add interest, but I think reading may just stay the most niche of my content, somehow.

In the future, I would love to do something like Arypie's My Immortal stream, but ideally staging scenes from a play with other chuubas playing different roles. That could be realtime clippable since there would be interactive elements and multiple actors involved.

Setting up fixed elements in your story like enemies and events is perfectly fine. The trick is to leave their implications with the players open and use a lot of potential, generic tie-ins, so players don't have to take a specific route for the enemy to make sense.
