Nekomasu/Mikoko was probably first mal/babiniku vtuber that really was doing well. Sadly kinda disappeared from sight for US viewers due to problems with his first youtuber channel and focusing on NicoNico stuff.

kizuna ai, it caught my attention and i looked into it for a week max, then completely forgot about chuubas. It seemed mildly interesting but i didn't enjoy kizuna ai because i didn't speak japanese, and didn't try looking into other chuubas. I didn't watch chuubas for at least a year, until i saw the festival bandaid clip. from there i became a clipnigger for translated clips of matsuri and rushia. That progressed to me watching clips for a lot of the various holos, then i started watching chammer's english content.
I finally found my oshi when artia started streaming on twitch (i think i missed her first 2 streams but caught all the rest). at this point i stopped being a clipnigger and started just watching artia and haato's english streams. When holo EN happened gura became my second favorite chuuba, civia became my third, chammers remained 4th.

Backed off on that, and settled on Ame for a few months. Fell off after a few months until early 2020 when people started occasionally linking clips in IRC, and I would check the tumor thread on /wsg/ on the rare occasion I went there. Watched the HoloEN debuts even though I didn't plan to actually watch tumors at the time, but a month or two later I gave in and started watching a fair bit of Hololive. Now I sub to most any JP tumor that I think might do something I'd want to watch at some point. Gives plenty of options.

I saw Kizuna first and thought it was kind of weird but cute. A video she did as an ad for Azur Lane in English stands out to me. I didn’t watch her stuff regularly but a video here and there. Fast forward a bit I got a random gifted sub to Froot. I must have clicked on her channel at some point but don’t remember watching her at all before that. Since I had the sub I figured I’d watch a stream or two. I was quickly hooked.

A friend introduced me to Kizuna Ai a few years ago. I thought it was kinda cool but didn't think much of it. A year later I went back to check her out and started binging some of her videos. This was around the time when Hololive and Nijisanji started up so I kept getting recommendations in my feed for vtubers like Shizuka Rin and Natsuri Matsuri. Eventually I swallowed my pride and decided to descend into the rabbit hole. I started watching Shizuka Rin because I loved her design and Miko Sakura because she was playing GTAV. To this day I still watch Miko and I occasionally will tune in to ShizuRin's stream, but Kizuna is just so hard to keep up with as a Westerner.

Watched a few Kizuna Ai videos like half a year before the boom and thought they were fun but didn't really get hooked. Then one day Youtube recommended to me the one with her talking about Luna which opened my eyes to it being a growing scene and I suppose the thing that ended up really getting me into it was the indie scene of early 2020.
