The reality is from a learner's perspective, thanks to kanji, someone who reaches an intermediate level of Japanese is going to have a much easier time reaching an advanced level than some at a Korean intermediate level. It's probably easier for english speakers to learn Japanese than it is for japanese speakers to learn English because english has so many words because of its grammar syntax and japanese is (mostly) super straight forward on how you pronounce things whereas in english sometimes it's a mystery because we blur letters together when we speak them to lower the amount of syllables.
