I've done movie viewings plenty of times with people I don't really know. it's a nice icebreaker.

I don't really see much difference between watching 3 hours of a movie with commentary or 2-3 hours watching someone play a game, which I usually tab for background noise anyway.
I'm personally more likely to watch the full 3 hours of the movie if it's something I actually feel like watching.
