She wasn't defending cheating and even explicitly said as much, some people were looking far deeper into this plot than she did. Wife barely had a character so we didn't really see her lying/manipulating things are already done when the film starts. She later briefly explained her motivation through dialogue as a sort of mid-life crisis woman version but continues to live a boring life and doesn't even show much affection to her lover so what was the point? Modern Hollywood is too pussy to write believable female characters especially flawed ones.
Anyway it probably wouldn't be discussed nearly as much if not for her weird take from the button stream early this year but even with that one I wouldn't think too much about one awkward answer out of many when she just tried to be smarter than she is.
