I hate watching people do things just for numbers or try to sanitize themselves for the sake of appearing professional. I watch indies for a reason. I think streaming in particular is a thing where something feeling safe and corporate is a serious detriment since most people (I'd hope anyway) are there for a person and not a product.

I should preface this with an explanation. This list is ranking chuubas by how seriously they take vtubing as an art form and a business, and their talents (natural or hard-earned) at pleasing an audience in a live stream. Such talents include technical know-how, self-promotion and networking, social media use, asset/emotive use, chat interaction, gameplay, conversation, art, singing, voice acting, and how to balance all the things that are part of the spinning plates act that is a livestream. It's not a "best" or "most popular" list. Some chuubas are poor entertainers and still big or popular, and some are good entertainers and still small or unpopular. Personal charm is also somewhat independent of skill, since a charming personality can be wasted by not using it to good effect, dooming a chuuba to niche status.
- Professionals: What it says on the tin. A combination of talent, hard work, and love of the medium sets these chuubas apart. They're "on" for every stream and always trying to please their audience.
- Talented Amateurs: These ones have a lot of potential but either don't know everything to be at their peak yet or apply what they know inconsistently. Still good at what they do, though.
- Hobbyists: Inexperienced, don't take vtubing especially seriously yet, or have issues holding them back.
- Not Here To Entertain You: Could be good entertainers if they wanted to be. They just don't want to be. And then there's Woyde.

It is less of a buff than you might think. More of an exposure thing, really. If someone is /here/, I have more confidence that a stray moment of autism is going to be taken in good faith, which makes me more willing to break the lurk barrier. It feels much more comfortable to follow/talk than, say, a prominent twitter chuuba who follows those arcane social conventions. But if a streamer isn't interesting/enjoyable, I'm not going to follow them just for being /here/.

I remember a stream you did a while ago that was basically just watching youtube videos together and while it had a different energy compared to a Corpse cytube I think it was still a really good time. Still captured that "hanging out with friends" feeling if nothing else which is arguably the most important aspect of it. Push comes to shove, you could always just do another collab.

reading streams are great, the main issue with the is that on a long reading they're usually hard to join mid-way through without being confused. still, if you're able to get in before the start of the reading, the post-reading discussion is always fun

it's a bit hard to pick out a favorite given the variety of designs out there
i'm a fan of minimalist models like corpse, bag, and spacer, since the effort usually invested in those models gets spent on some other more enjoyable thing (corpse's and spacer's keyfabe/game taste, paperbag's multiple models and game taste)
i also enjoy models that deviate from the standard "anime character" but it's mostly just on a technical level and not a huge selling point for me

Checking the front desk for Shimabed since I've missed bloody everything today and was looking to do the one thing I try to do every time I see him, and I sees a surveypost so I responds.
1) Any kind of stream where the chuuba gets to go on a passionate, often incoherent rant about something they greatly enjoy. Sometimes its games, sometimes its between songs in karaoke, sometimes it's the pre-content warmups, it's always fun when someone really gets to go off in an excited, happy way.
2) Gotta be singan'. Can't have enough singan'. Especially because I can't carry a tune in a bucket, despite trying.
3) It's gotta be Caleb's absolute bugheaded stubbornness to tackle Soulslikes with a big beefy blocking build, even in games where the directors very obviously wanted you to flippyninja around like a pansy. Him slogging The Surge despite all efforts for the devs to invalidate blocking builds made his reaction to The Surge 2 fixing their shit all the sweeter.
4) Seeing them have an obviously bad time. It's one thing to get stuck on something with ribbing from chat making them grumpy, its another entirely when you can tell the tilting went beyond the game and something has soured the mood completely. At that point, it'd probably be better for them to swap gears and do something that they know will perk them up, be it silent music appreciation or watchlongs of doofy youtube videos or even calling it early with a "gonna go make a happy" message.
5) I'm still waiting. Might be my life circumstances, but THE ONE hasn't punched me. I want several to make it, and have rantposted a few times for them, but there isn't just one.
6) Painfully tough. For a spread of content, Caleb, Eira, and Nyaru probably.
7) Hybrid. Severe social anxiety, lingering effects of lurking here for more than a decade, and a dash of probable tism make for a potent mix. Honestly, I do not know. I think for most streamer that being really preoccupied with growth is unfortunately natural. I have an issue with feeling like I am "worth" my audience, so my lack of numberfagging is likely thinly veiled insecurity. But I will say, your foundation is really important. What motivates you to stream? Why are you sharing what you do with an audience? For me, I was severely unsocialized and had no motivation to do anything. I rarely left my bed to even eat some days because it all felt pointless. All I did was watch vtubers. But the idea of trying out streaming myself forced me to finally move and actually dedicate myself to learning something. So my focus is always creating and sharing myself with others and getting to know people. I think if your motivation is becoming popular, or emulating larger vtubers, that you will naturally focus on numbers (and that is not necessarily a bad thing, like I said before). For me, it depends on what makes you happiest. I actually really enjoy where I am right now because I love my chat culture and the regulars who come by. I still think about regulars who kind of faded out or are not able to visit as often...

I think focusing on your core is the best, but I will be honest and say I have no idea how to actually grow. I wish I could help more, but maybe other chuubas can help.
