MH is one of those games where people completely underestimate how clunkily your character controls and how opaque the mechanics are because MH players have put up with the acquired taste for way too long and have beeping Stockholm Syndrome, I still remember when people would go to bat to defend old janky hip check hitboxes or your hunter doing the gay little flex that pisses you off every time you pop an item

Yes there are, but no one that wants you to start the game will reccomend you that outside of specific hunts or once you are a fair bit into the game.

They are an absolute money sink having to craft/buy ammo every hunt, without counting that most of the starting bowgun gear is shit, they are doable, but you lose a lot of damage once your main source of damage is lost (running out of coatings/the actual good bullets)

Yeah MH onboarding is still kinda shitty. Biboo trying to pick up a new weapon is a pretty good model for taking it one step at a time:
>Figure out your weapon's basic bread and butter combo first and focus on just hitting that reliably without getting knocked on your ass
>Get used to inventory management and using basic consumables quickly (fast pots and status cleansers, getting your poop and flash bombs out), preferrably way before where she's at in the game
>Start looking up more advanced combos and niche interactions on your weapon once you're comfy with it
>As you may have noticed from watching Biboo, the game does not generally reward you for greedy hail mary attacks unless you really know how the monster works and moves
Don't be afraid to just look shit up online if you need to as well, there's plenty of stuff about how bosses and skills work that isn't immediately apparent as a new player.

I can't get into MH because as awesome as it is to hunt giant monsters with giant swords with incredible movesets, everything feels too "mechanical" for me. The attacks have an exact animation, and they will only do damage if that animation hitbox intersects with the boss, meaning there are a lot of swings that end up doing nothing but move your character around slightly. Can't get into combat systems like that, I much prefer to have a game with combat like Chivalry, though I know movesets are virtually impossible to more freedom you give to user movement.

A quick run down:
Monsters have hitzone values (HZV) that determine how much damage they take.
Lets say a monster has a HZV of .4, and you hit it for "100" the monster would take 40 damage. The displayed damage already takes this into account.
If you tenderize a .4 hitzone it increases to .55, meaning you now hit for 55, or a 37.5% increase.
If it was a .1 hitzone, it becomes a .325 hitzone, increasing damage by 325%
