Right now, South Korea is basically completely controlled by the chaebols (large family-owned conglomerates that essentially own ridiculous %s of the S.Korea econ like...Samsung), and the corruption, nepotism and just generally piss-poor governance has led to a situation called "Hell Joseon", which roughly means that "South Korea is a hellish and hopeless society".
People are expected to put in ridiculous hours in school just for the CHANCE that they'll be picked up by one of the chaebols so that they MIGHT have a chance at living a half-decent life, where they're then expected to slave away. That's for the men. The women are expected to "be pretty for their husbands and be the perfect housewives" because that's what the societal expectations are of both genders. This has led to no small amount of friction between them, which, to cut a very long story short, has broiled over into a gender war. Of course, it's all a distraction that ultimately doesn't address the real problem (chaebol corruption and deep-seated wealth and opportunity inequality), but it means that anyone who wants to step into that mess has to be aware they're walking into a minefield, EVEN MORE SO for a Japanese comapny.

Corruption and political fuckery means that it's very risky, even though one wouldn't think of South Korea as a hellish place to try to expand to.
