Discworld. No introduction needed.
he Satanic Verses is a fantasy book, but you'll need to have knowledge of Islam and Hinduism to appreciate it. Salman's newer books are more approachable.
Also, I didn't say LoTR is awful. People treat it like it's godsent and act like the biggest pricks on the planet whenever someone criticizes it and it's annoying.

It's not just the fact that it's sad, I enjoy a good bittersweet ending as much as anyone else, it just always struck me as kind of contrived. So you have this cosmic coincidence that the universe can somehow support one hole in its existence, but only one, not two or five, and they're already using it for something so Will and Lyra have to give up on seeing each other ever again (right after they've realised how much they love each other) and reunite after they die. But if the whole point of leaving the portal for the dead open is to return Dust to the universe, shouldn't it not matter? And there are ways of travelling between worlds without using portals, and they've met some people who can do that, but they just... decide not to learn it...? It's like the universe itself is conspiring to keep them apart. I dunno, it always felt to me like Pullman wanted a bittersweet ending so it just got constructed without the forethought of some of the rest of the series. That said. I still loved it and the emotional impact of the ending is just about enough for me to ignore the issues I have with it.

All these replies saying that women love LotR (although it's pretty telling that every example is either an internet personality or their mother) but it is an undeniable fact that LotR fandom splits heavily towards men. They do, but you have to understand that women are THE tourist demographic. They'll buy a bag full of dice and retweet articles about making D&D more inclusive, but they'll drop out of any campaign they ever join in 1-2 sessions. They'll come to EDH knight with their boyfriend, but they'll choose cards based on how much they like the pictures and only learn the most basic rules of the game. My aunt talks about how much she loves LotR, but has till never watched any of the Hobbit trilogy movies. Change the word "love" to "mildly interested" if that helps you wrap your mind around their mentality.

I should have included this in my post, but I bought her the first Hobbit on DVD for Christmas years ago because she likes LotR and she's never bothered to watch it. i don't understand this sentence. the Hobbit movies are a money wrenching abomination just like The Rise of Skywalker (which left me just feeling beyond sad) and have little to do with the source material. yes, i do mourn what could have been, that's the point.

Sure, but my point is that seeing a poor adaptation shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of the source. Is seeing the movies going to make you enjoy the book less for having done so? There's still some good things that, in my opinion, make the movies worth seeing. That's different from buying a dozen tickets on opening night, now seeing the films costs you nothing but time.
I saw Rise of Skywalker and was glad I did because I got to see Billy Dee Williams and Denis Lawson on screen again

Okay I have a quick question. Before I watched the LoTR movies (fairly recently) I knew nothing about them, and at one point there was a movie playing on TV a family member was watching. I was 100% sure it was LoTR or at least related to it. The scene playing took place in what looked like a village or town but by a harbor. It was being attacked, and I remember a scene where Legolas climbs through a window or something. But when I actually watched the LoTR trilogy there was no such scene.
