It only matters to me that somewhere in the fic, there's a starting point at least mostly based in canon. As long as there's a depiction of the character acting how they usually would in-universe (or in real life in the case of VTubers) and some sort of character gradient or explanation, they can end up in literally whatever state by the end and it feels acceptable to me.

Unfortunately, that still puts a damper on stuff like Omelas for me, which in the context of OCs would be a nice bit of fiction, but is really uncomfortable to read when characters I'm familiar with are forced into a mold. Of course, I know there's a substantial group of readers with a less strict view of things that can get enjoyment out of whatever as long as something creative's being done, and I can empathize in the context of porn since my dick tends to care more about the fetishes involved than narrative quality, but it causes too much mental whiplash in me personally to overlook.
