The best argument against cars is that they are bad for small businesses. If your walking around a city, you might pass by a small business and look inside. Brit, actually. I speak enough French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese to get by without much problem. Basic Polish from the time I spent there too. I went Inter-railing in my student days. Spent time in most major cities across the continent. Travelled to 80% of the EU countries over the years. Lived in Spain for a year. The rural areas and poorer countries have worse public transport but that's irrelevant for city dwellers. The worst public transport I experienced was Italy and Poland. Best is London. All the capital cities are perfectly good. As someone who lives in NYC I can confirm this. I hear all the time about how shit our public transport is and blah blah blah, and yeah the MTA is retarded I agree. But I also live on the border of the city, which means sometimes I have to take public transit that isn't run by the city. And I always tell anyone who complains about city transit that doing this will make you wish you were back on city transit. You don't know how good you have it until you've seen just how bad it is everywhere else.

That said I'm sure Japan's public transit beats the shit out of ours since they probably get fired for being even 2 minutes late.

Yes, for very old cities like you find in Italy and a lot of central Europe, having a car becomes difficult because of space and size issues. I have traveled Italy myself and public transit was fine for the most part, other than them being lazy cunts and schedules not meaning shit.
From my time in London the public transport was a vast improvement over my country with the underground and is probably the most efficient in all of Europe.

Longest I waited for a train was a shinkansen for 20 minutes where I missed the previous one the moment I got there. Also for some reason one train skip the stop and I had to find out a way to go the other way to get to Mt. Inari in Kyoto.
