I feel like wall techs/jumps make for good corner play, and a “burst” option to avoid infinites on the wall would fix that. I find the fighting game characters in smash awkward. Not unusable. I quite like playing Terry when I do play the game sometimes with friends. Mate the special button versions are useable enough. Leaving things accessible while rewarding execution is not a bad thing. Git gud, play another character, or learn to play them with the non-powered up versions. I never did the input for Terry's rising tackle for example. I can agree that it is weird to have commands that way, but it works fine. Tekken (for a 3d fighter) has movement tech and even unique to tekken inputs, but is just fine. Granted I assume you are talking about a 'wide open' style game like platform fighters are over something traditional with good movement. Not saying you should have inputs, but rewarding higher execution is not a bad thing. Doubly so when it doesn't make a character suddenly 'unfun' like some puppet characters for example.

The execution lies in reacting properly to DI and your opponent’s options. Never been a fan of the idea that pressing more buttons faster should be more rewarding than responding correctly to the situation you’re presented with or mind-gaming. My philosophy is that skill floor to do cool things should be as low as possible, and skill ceiling should be as high as possible, which means divorcing input speed/ability from reward as far as I can (eg. no L-canceling, refreshing tech buffer when hit)
