Live 2d is actually 3d manipulation of planes.
So live 2d IS 3d in it's own way.
The issue isn't that it's overrated or some cost-effective way to stream, it's that people do not utilize the medium to it's full effect.
You can do so many interesting things with live2d and yet everyone just makes typical overly bouncy models.
You can have a live 2d model respond to mouse input, controller input, one guy even made a model concept that can physically grab things in vts and move them around.
There's a lot of untapped potential here.

And 3D is cool and all but it's oversaturated all the same, vroids and people just comming very obvious VRC model creators, making the same tired hand gestures because they paid money for a leapmotion or whatever else and it only recognizes when you raise your hands to a specific point that creates an awkward gesture
People also don't tap into the full potential of a 3d models, and usually turn to unreal engine and have shit that runs at 5-15fps for an entire stream.

Oh, that is a big relief to hear. I don't need to get big or dream of a career as a Vtuber, but I already spend a lot of my free time preserving and archiving early fan works, as well as some official goods. I take requests from /a/ and other boards on what to scan first, and I already have thousands of doujinshi, and hundreds of magazines, CDs, and pieces of assorted software, but then I just drop a link for download and add it to the internet archive and I feel kind of lonely after a while. It would just be nice to talk to other about the media. I think for streams I'd have to keep the lewder books and games off-screen (though I'm still happy to upload them) but mentioning I'm essentially doing piracy is kind of a strange grey area. I have enough fan goods that I can stick to those for streaming so I don't think it would be a direct copyright issue. Maybe. I would need to read more up on this.

For example I loved Ragnarok Online many years ago and I've collected a lot of fan made works for it. Dozens of fan arrangements of the music, lots of books, comics, games, etc. Having a day where I focus on that series and play a little of the music in the background while I show some of the pages from the comics, then show off a little of the gameplay from the non-adult themed games, like a puyo puyo clone, maybe the guild building sim, some shmups, then finish with a link to all the the material I mentioned in the archive for others to download. I could mix in content from official sources like old defunct magazines and website archives I have, maybe if I'm careful.

People could ask for a specific series to be highlighted and if I have the material I could cover that.

I'm in the middle of moving at the moment and I don't even own a mic so it will be a bit, but just knowing that there are people out there that would join me is deeply encouraging. I will begin to read up on the basics for software and hardware.
