By the time of gen 5 audition (start of 2020), the ratio was 1:1200 (provided by Subaru) so at least 6000 applied for gen 5. That was before the big pandemic boom. When vsinger audition happened, we were long past that. HoloEN awakened the global market, and Gura blew the lid open with nearly 2 million subscribers, becoming the biggest hololive and 2nd only to Kizuna Ai. So not only the number of applicants increased, but also their quality.

Yet, Irys was literally the first choice, beating the other thousands that applied. When we look at the one on top, we forget the 9999 that failed, not knowing how hard it was. That's literally a bigger achievement than anything most vtubers can boast of in their lifetime.
