I don't think I understand what exactly the joke was. That they were playing up how tired they were was fairly obvious. Diets always work, you just don't see what they are either eating or not eating behind closed doors. If for example I went to a party and ate a whole pizza or something I wouldn't put on any weight, because the whole week after I would just eat my usual 1200-1500 calories a day.
Most people that claim they are on a diet also end up slipping out that they just had a couple snacks or something every day. Then you peek at those snacks and find out oh they had 3 little tiny snack bars that total out to 700 calories or basically a full meal and a half in between their normal meals but they are to dense to comprehend why they aren't losing weight somehow.
