Why is Tanya's voice so fucking cute? It's the perfect pitch for one. English speaking vtubers tend to either be too high-pitched or too deep, but Tanya's is perfect. Two, while I normally hate how ESLs sound, her way of speaking is so endearing. Normally, mispronunciations and other things that ESLs do bother me, but her way of speaking for some reason sounds cute because of these imperfections. I don't know what to say. I've listened to hundreds of different English speaking vtubers and Tanya is clearly the cutest sounding.

To help pass the time until the next streams I've started up a game of Elminage Gothic with an africat+ party. Been struck with decision paralysis regarding their party composition but I finally settled on something that should hopefully work throughout the game. The game doesn't have a built-in custom portrait feature like Elminage Original did, but getting them in the game is actually really easy anyway. Didn't have the Mysteria girls' full body portraits so I made some using Koikatsu models instead.

So far things are going alright. Neko being a samurai means she can dual wield katanas and cast mage spells, but I've yet to find two katanas that aren't two-handed. Velty is a brawler and pretty much annihilates most enemies with her combos. Haru is currently a cleric so she can learn cleric spells, but I'll class change her to alchemist once she's learned all she can so she can start crafting and enchanting items. Tanya is a thief, and while her finding and disabling traps is useful she'll be doing a lot more thieving once she can disarm and steal enemy equipment. Lilith is currently a summoner and managed to contract an orc, but once she's got enough summoner spell slots I'll class change her to mage, then to bishop. Ari should be a hunter, but she's stuck as an alchemist for now until she's learned all spells so she can inherit them all for her hunter class change.

This game's dungeon maps are some intense nonsense and we end up running in circles a lot, which is appropriate but goddamn. Have to get over the initial grinding hurdle before things start getting very silly with crafting and class mastery skills.

I hate that Tanya is one of the best vtubers out there in terms of interactivity, voice, and cuteness, but yet, she will never get the same level of fame that some others get. And the sad fact of the matter is that all it would take is one or two collabs with a Holo for her numbers to probably quadruple easily. I'm happy that she's doing well for an indie, and she is doing better than the vast majority of indies who get posted on this board, but she could produce the same great content for years and would never come close to the numbers of any Holo. I know numberfagging is wrong, but I want her to be noticed by more people, get some more money so she can leave that shithole, and make a real living off of this. It really bothers me when that new Holo can get over 200k subs without debuting, but Tanya will never reach that number. It's not fair. And this all just makes me want to save her more.

The first thing you learn when getting into indietubers is that you can't save them all, or even some of them. Many deserve more than what they get. You can find peace in the knowledge that some of them get more than they expected and even enough to support themselves, and are content with this. On the positive side, one thing that is kind of nice about all of the africats being relatively small is that we are probably the single biggest place to talk about them consistently. No matter how large /vt/ or /jp/ is, the Reddit Holo and Niji subreddits are going to be more popular and where the attention goes. While this general may have 50-150 people at most give or take, it is nice that we are able to talk about them like this. Maybe some of the cats will give us some attention, maybe not. Bit of a tough question, let's see.

For Tanya you can usually jump into any stream and get the full experience. She had a lot of fun with Yakuza, though she mostly played that on twitch and the VODs are kill. The collabs are always fun, the Jeopardy one in particular was surprisingly well hosted. Papers Please and Façade are full of chaotic moments, and her Faust's Alptraum speedrun attempt is an example of how stubborn she can be in trying to achieve a goal.

Watch Neko's anniversary karaoke before Susan decides to nuke it. Little Nightmares, Fran Bow, and Inside are great streams to showcase how even when she hates puzzles and bumbles around a lot she somehow still competently solves them at a pretty decent pace. She made pretty good progress in her first Subnautica stream too. Her recent streams have been plagued with ISP issues unfortunately, but her last zatsudan on twitch was still comfy. Additionally, and to get a good idea of two for one, you could watch the Neko/Lilith collab which is now only on Lilith's channel since twitch deleted Neko's VOD.

Ari has different moods for the different games she plays. You get spooked Ari in Subnautica, salty gamer Ari in Apex, herding cats in her Minecraft SMP streams, imitating a multitude of accents in Undertale, and reasonably competent Ari in Titanfall and Shadow of Mordor. Most of her streams are pretty fair picks.

Haru has very comfy drawing and JP reps streams. I think it's pretty straightforward with her.

Lilith again I'd recommend the Neko collab, but most of her Apex and VALORANT streams are pretty fun to listen to, mostly because she has a lot of stories to tell and not much of a filter on her. Her chat interaction is pretty good in all of them. At one point she even gave chat relationship and dating advice mid-game.

Velty is still new, so you can check her debut and basically be up to date with the rest of the thread. Her afterparty karaoke is probably a must-watch, and her story time is nice.

Puji and Azura are only on twitch so regarding VODs you basically just watch what you can get before twitch nukes them and check clips for anything else.

They do matter. While Tanya has hit a number that could let her feel happy where she is, it certainly would be better for her to grow. While it isn't my place to set her goals for her, I just want her to succeed. The problem with chasing after bigger numbers is running into burnout, at which point streaming stops being fun and becomes more of a job. This should not happen. In the end everything should still be fun and something to look forward to, both for the viewers and the streamer. Popularity should be secondary to the primary objective of everyone enjoying themselves.

the twitch situation is unfortunately fucky because of SA servers and unreliable relays, but it's something that's being worked on. Interestingly this can more or less be observed with honey goblin, who fostered a community of 100+ viewers within a month or two, then saw an overnight growth of 1.5k+ from going viral by accident. Hitting that kind of jackpot is a once in a blue moon kind of situation and cannot reasonably be aimed for, but it'd be interesting to see how she'd handle that kind of crowd. She seems to be able to manage 100-200 fine, at least as long as it's not all children as we've seen with FNF.

My initial post was mostly complaining about how easy some vtubers have it just by being a part of a certain company. I'm sure they are talented in their own right and had to compete to get their positions, but I really think Tanya would be one of the top ones in terms of subs and perhaps views if she just got the type of exposure they did. The scaling of these numbers is fucking insane too. Tanya is amazing for being as successful as she is, and I'm very proud of her. However, it's crazy that 6k subs is considered a lot for an indie when the lowest Holos are in the hundreds of thousands when they haven't even debuted. It feels like there is no middle ground. You either crawl your way for years to get a few thousand or you just explode into a bunch because of luck or the agency you are a part of. The ONLY indies to cross this threshold or even just get in the 10 thousands is because they either got in really early, did not start as a vtuber, or collabed with another popular vtuber. It just is so fucking unfair.

It's something to discuss while waiting for the streams I suppose, but also something that comes up a lot in /wvt/ since many perspectives have been flipped from watching the top vtubers to the ones at the bottom. The one thing that does help for putting things in perspective is that the actual absolute bottom is so vast and full of single-digit viewer streamers that someone approaching the hundreds or even a thousand concurrent viewers can basically be considered big. You have to start seeing holos and nijis as a separate world from indies, even when not that much differentiates them content wise.

One thing that makes me a little hopeful is that a lot of other adjacent vtubers are growing, and they all lift each other up little by little. That community aspect is something you don't really get from corporate vtubers, as they're being carried in part by their name rather than the communities they built. Neko, the Mysteria girls, and Azura have all been working their way towards reaching out to other vtubers to get more exposure and attract more viewers. Tanya is taking steps to doing that too. Still a little hopeful for an eventual Ebi collab.

Kitanya has endless genki energy and is able to keep a stream going for 10+ hours without ever stopping to breathe. Very fun, creative, and multitalented. Something of an S and a prankster. Technically wholesome, but has moments where subtle lewdity slips through, particularly when she's interacting with her friends. Plays a variety of games, but seems mostly interested in Minecraft and recently Yakuza. Wildcard in terms of comfy and chaotic.

Neko is a sweet unpredictable dork who goes from weird, to horny, to heart-meltingly adorable at a moment's notice. She has inspired very confused Gosling emotions. Very sweet singing voice. Enjoys messing around with her voice changer. Hates puzzles, but ends up playing a lot of puzzle games, which she often ends up solving by accident. Lewd energy, never explicit, knows exactly what she's doing. Chaotic gameplay, comfy chatting.

Ari is simultaneously sassy and genki while having a low energy voice. Her avatar is very bouncy, and she can effortlessly banter with chat. Can imitate a lot of accents. Cute when spooked, which is often. FPS cat, potentially a young EN Botan. Pretty comfy, but can get salty.

Haru is the second Mysteria member. Very cute and comfy streams. Gives off that little sister energy. Seems to want to do some JP learning and mixes it into her speech, frequently mumbling JP phrases. Draws, plays cute games. Likes snacks a lot.

Lilith is third Mysteria member. Not a cat, but a fallen angel. Keeps her keyfabe up pretty seamlessly while talking about what saffa is like. Probably the most openly lewdest of the bunch, but not in a very explicit way. FPS games like VALORANT and Apex. Likes to get drunk. Just an overall fun person.

Velty is the newest Mysteria member, having only debuted about two weeks ago, but so far she's shown a pretty varied list of games and interests. She does the bratty demon overlord thing and talks in third person from time to time, which is fun. Good singer, check out her debut karaoke. Plays fighting games, strategy, seems to have an interest in chess and D&D, and may be doing a weekly story time reading stream.

Puji has a cute laugh and is very sociable, can easily hold a conversation and entertain chat and collab partners. Also a bit of an S, likes to bully but in such a way that you can't even be mad at her. Recently returned, and will be debuting her new model soon. Has more of an onee-san approach. Draws and plays more co-op and party games like Brawlhalla and Super Animal Royale. Not actually a cat. Mostly chaotic, pretty fun.

Going down the list is a safe enough bet. Most got into this circle through Kitanya, and she is just about the biggest of the bunch, but they're all worth taking a look at.

I'm curious about something. How did everybody here find out about the Africats? I found them through these threads, as I'm sure plenty of you did. However, somebody needed to start the threads and there needed to be other anons posting in the beginning too. For those who found them before /vt/, did you just randomly come across one of their streams or something? Was it just saviorfagging initially, but genuinely finding diamonds in the rough? Or perhaps one of them made these threads like some EN indies have.

It all started out with Tanya in October. This was shortly before even the /trash/ wvt times, months before /vt/ was made. Her debut somehow got caught in YT's algo, and had a reddit post up on the vtuber subreddit which got a good amount of traction, so by sheer chance she managed to get a couple hundred pairs of eyes on her, including some anons who posted her back in /jp/ when western vtubers didn't really have any other place to be posted in. This was around the time of Artemis' debut, so anons were simultaneously irritated at the overshilled debut being such a disappointment, mixed with anons going 'I told you so', which bothered the /jp/ meidos enough to cause the migration to /trash/. Initially /wvt/ was just going to be one thread, but someone happened to post Tanya's debut there. This was the 18 hour debut. It immediately captivated many anons not just for the novelty of an SA vtuber, but her many unique quirks, charisma, and boundless energy. The stream only ended when her phone just about melted. I forgot what the exact numbers were throughout that stream, but she managed to amass some 300+ concurrent viewers and shot up past 500 subs on that day alone.

For the first couple weeks the then-wvt was mostly focused on her. Homegrown vtubers weren't a thing yet, and Koopa was still just a joke concept. Even other western indies were still in the making, so she got in early before the oversaturation started hampering newcomers. Some time after this Neko made her redebut as well, and an interest in SA-based vtubers started to grow. Since /wvt/ itself had grown into many different discussions of many vtubers of varying sized and backgrounds, it seemed reasonable to start a thread dedicated to the africats. Ari and Puji were found sort of by coincidence, and it was funny how at the time all SA vtubers were mostly cat themed - even Puji who isn't a cat as such, but is themed after a cat cafe waitress.

It definitely was a diamond in the rough situation.
