I have done my best to avoid VTubers for a long while, I just found them a bit uncanny valley with how they move and a bit corporate. But at the end of the day I know they're entertainment and I should get the stick out of my ass.
So, redpill me; what do you find to be the appeal of VTubers? Is it just the cute anime girls/boys? Is it something more? What makes you keep coming to them day after day and posting in this board? Genuinely want to know.

PS: I like this one. Their design is really hot.

Some of them are really good singers, and unlike normal singers where I need to view obviously planned interviews to take glimpse of their probably made up personalities, I can tune in to the Vtuber's streams enjoy their personality shining through their actual words and actions.

Also, I just plain enjoy seeing others playing/reacting to games I enjoy.

They're unironically a million times better version of the idol experience

There is an aspect of "cute anime girl/boy playing vidya" to it, but also I the atmosphere of Vtuber streams tend to be a bit...different I suppose? they tend to be more cosy and intimate feeling then your average "GamerGod88" Twitch streamer. In the case of Hololive, Nijisanji, and other significantly sized Vtuber groups, part of the fun is seeing them interact with each other as a big group. Some V-tubers also sort of lean into a character which helps to make the streams feel different to none vtuber streams, even if you tend to only listen to audio (which is what I tend to do).

Apart from that, it has the sort of "Dwarf Fortress, Team Fortress, Touhou" thing around it in that there's a huge community that surrounds the fanbase that creates memes and acts as a large facet of the experience in itself.

That makes sense. But for me, the types of songs that idols tend to sing aren't what really catch my interest. So while I can admire their talents, I don't really feel a drive to actively follow them. I do tend to prefer the more utaite style songs, though.. (Which I guess is what makes Ryuushen appeal to me lol.. maybe they'll be my gateway)
Also I find it funny how something so initially niche like using facerig technology to stream games ahs become part of this giant idol industry.. I guess idolification is the natural conclusion for this sort of stuff haha

Vtuber != idol with an anime face, and a lot of Vtubers are former-utaites. If you look deep enough, you may find some familiar voices.

Sure singing and idol shows may be a popular avenue, but if I'm thinking vtubing as an industry, I think the better comparison would be cabaret clubs(aka hostess clubs as the west knows them). The biggest earners are all women who are paid big bucks by men looking for attention.

Among japanese sites it's not too uncommon to see big-earning female vtubers called キャバクラ嬢 derisively for example

Ryuushen hijack? I've lost count of the amount of times I've listened to his Villain cover.
