I guess that's true in some sense, but at the same time I feel like that elira was way better than 99% of what anyone was making at the time. Pre-HLL didn't really have good gens in the same way imo. The best you could usually hope for was funny instead of truly nice looking.
I think this kanata is the oldest gen of mine I still have that I'd consider good, it's from last christmas. It was also originally a joke idea (haha isn't it funny she already has a christmas star on her head) but some of them just looked like normally nice images. And even this is on the first version of HLL

One of these sorts of things came around a while back that was supposed to block people from creating style loras from your art, it got tested out here and it turned out to not only be useless but to take like 30 minutes processing per image.
So I'm not really expecting anything along these lines to do anything at all really without proven real-world samples of it happening. It's pretty stupid because by now everyone should stop relying on image-text pairs anyway. The datasets should only be made up of images with text descriptions either being manually created by the one who plans to work with it or use another AI to tag them instead of relying on pre-existing ALT text.
Even if they planned to add some magical pixels that alter a dataset(which this method doesn't seem to do) the solution is easy. Just convert all images to jpeg before training to get rid of the alpha channel.

Nah. If you read later in the paper, the way the poisoning works is that it is supposed to trick the model once trained to activate nodes to a secondary unrelated concept.
The idea is that while the image is the same, the AI is associating to another concept entirely, even with proper tagging. So in their examples, when poisoning the concept of dog, they are trying to change it to the concept of cat without changing the trigger words.

img2img and controlnet are both ways of influencing a generated image with a given source image. For a sort of simplified explanation (that might not be even super correct):

img2img generates essentially as a modification of the original image. It takes the image as a source and tries to transform it based on your prompt into something else. Pretty straightforward but if your target is too different you have to turn the denoising way up and that can change parts of the image you might not want changed.

Controlnet takes the source image and processes it into some sort of "guidance" image (not sure the actual name for this). Usually it's based on lines/depth/contours of the source image but there's a bunch of different preprocessor types. And then it uses that to guide a completely fresh generation. Personally I prefer this one for trying to replicate images with other characters since img2img usually feels either too strict or not strict enough

I am dumb and should have just read the paper. They tested 4 different defense methods against it and they all seem mostly ineffective. And there's supposedly no way to really reverse the poisoning of an image so even in best case if you have 100% detection rate you still can't train on them, all you can do is avoid them entirely so they don't ruin the rest of your model.
The idea in general seems sound to me, leveraging the way you can often craft specific images that really mess with image-related AI. But at the same time with how fast generative AI has been moving I don't know how long it will continue working for even if it does work now

Well, found the actual problem.
It turns out you need TWO PATHS, one for the actual install of Python (which is the setting in the installer) AND you need one for whatever packages you install as a user (like PIP).
So after solving THAT, there was another problem. It couldn't find python torch.
And it turns out torch isn't available for 3.12.
