Summer 2021. Like a lot of other people, Coco's whole situation just demystified the magic of hololive for me.
All of Myth taking a break around the same time + the graduation + new small corpos and cool indies coming up just pulled me away from Hololive, and Council didn't manage to pull me back in.
That said, I still follow some JPs and Kiara occasionally but I'm not in the "ecosystem" anymore.

Ive never been a fan of hololive. I like the streamers. The org fucking sucks with how terribly they treat their streamers, don't let them play good games or sing more than 2 songs and spam meetings at 2 am so often that their stream quality suffers. Fucking terrible company. 8 of their streamers are great though.

Probably a year or so after Council. I did like Council, in fact I think their earlier collabs with Myth were some of the best HoloEN content we ever got. After awhile HoloEN including Council just started to stagnate and everyone just felt like they were going through the motions. Seems like things are a little better now with Advent but it doesn’t feel like gen 3 reinvigorated the rest of HoloEN as much as Council did at the time.

I don't mind idolshit if it's done in moderation. Pre-2020 Hololive was still fine and their events had charm to them, but when they started having concerts and special events every week it started feeling a lot less special.
Smaller corpos are like how Hololive used to be. The idolshit is still there, but it's far less frequent so it doesn't get jarring. I actually started to realize why the idol journey is so attractive to people.

I stopped watching not due to Coco's graduation, but due to Coco's treatment prior to graduation. EN were barred from interacting with her because Cover wanted to 'protect' them from her, the whole issue with her antis being modded, the girls having to stand up for her on stream when the company wouldn't.

Maybe management has improved since then, or maybe they've just managed to sanitise every Holo to the point where Cover don't actually need to reveal their incompetence. I haven't stayed to find out. Granted, I moved onto NijiEN and the last year hasn't been much better, so maybe the magic of Japanese corpos in general is just wearing out.

Mid-2020, I think. Around the time gen5 debuted. I felt like all I was going to get from Hololive was the same ol', and I wanted to see what other companies/indies had to offer. Also, every holo is guaranteed to start out huge, so there's no longer any idol journey to speak of in this idol company.
Way too many vtubers rely on the "cute voice + cute avatar" formula to drive their content, and it only serves to pull in retarded simps and drones (and their silly money). Talent and entertaining content are surprisingly absent in this industry. This applies to almost all of Hololive despite their shining brand, but also most of Nijisanji, 774, indies etc.

Clips are easily the best thing about the scene. I still catch the occasional holo/niji/other clip, but I couldn't possibly be bothered to waste my time on any of their streams. I've mostly gone back to anime and manga.

Just a comment on some of the legitimate responses to OP
I think the lack of a proper idol's journey for modern new holomem is a real issue that affects how people engage with an individual member. When a new member joins then they have basically made it, with guaranteed income and all the performances one could desire.
Struggle is what gives life meaning, so when there is a significantly reduce amount of struggle when following most holomem, I am not surprised when much of the community begins to search for extrinsic meaning for being a fan instead. The fanatic obsession of those who've gathered in the numbers thread is a symptom of this issue.
The search for a true idol's journey is why we've seen the growth of small corpo communities on this board. When you don't even know if your small corpo oshi can even pay rent for this month or if they can cover a sudden medical bill, your personal engagement shoots right up. When 3D might only be possible multiple years from now, that puts the carrot on a long but still potentially obtainable stick.
People still engage with certain absolute shitshow companies for a similar reason, because they want to follow legitimately good vtubers with lots of potential as they hopefully leave and move to a better environment.

tl;dr: People need meaning when they follow something and that's why some people "grew up out of" Hololive.

Of course the underdog narrative and the idea of growing along the audience is important to the image of a lot of JP idols (not so much Korean ones who are expected to already be competent performers upon debut), but this is taking it rather far. If you treat the prospect of your oshi not making rent as an additional spice to their performance you're effectively engaging in some sort of abstract idol-themed bloodsport. I don't think this is the reason as I doubt many people think this way and few companies out of Hololive go that hard with the idol gimmick

I think it's far more likely to be just that a smaller vtuber gives far more opportunities for audience interaction

Here's the thing about that. The two (well 3 technically) girls I like from EN are the 3 who wanted to be idols, who wanted to get popular in that field. All 3 have no ability to do that in any real compacity irl because they are hags. I am happy to see them get their dream come true, albeit not exactly the way they were thinking. To see them prepare for their concerts and song recordings, talk about the work they're doing for it, hear the excitement in their voice as they get to achive that dream of preforming on stage in front of a crowd bigger than a coffee house in their own brand of cuteness.
Kiara has talked about live performing multiple times now, how it feels to go out on stage and see maybe 5 people max, an empty-ish room, no one really enthusiastic in the crowd, but still needing to preform with the same energy she'd bring to a packed auditorium. I'm sure the dogs have had similar situations, and I'm just happy to be here to cheer them on as they get to enjoy being cute FOR US AND THEMSELVES on stage.

Go listen to those tour guide girls final speeches. They were much in the same situation and talked about how they wondered if they squandered everything in their life for a dream that wasn't achevable. Hearing the passion in these 3 girls has made the journy to FES (which they will have soon) so much fun and so satisfying when they finally get on that stage. I never understood idol culture or supporting someone like that until Kiara. Are there lulls? Yes, because unfortunately Cover and their livestreams aren't purely about the journy. But it gives us extra insight into their feelings and a lot of fun moments along the way that are a lot less 'stage presence'.
You talk a lot about the struggle, but there's struggles that are more than monitary, and there's still monitary struggles that are not breakable in their current positions. Kiara went into a depressive slumpbafter her album was released because the next thing on the bucket list, a solo3d live, seems almost impossible for a multiude of reasons, and her attempts to try and strike out into the world a little more with Eurovision seem to have fallen flat, all while her bank account took a big hit because she had to fund most of the album on her own.

I discovered VTubers when HoloMyth debuted, then I watched Mori and Gura every now and then for about half a year.
Then I just lost interest in VTubers until early 2022 I think, when I came /here/ on a whim to find new VTubers to try watching.
Started watching Pippa and Lumi, and branched out to the rest of Phase Connect and Phase friends. Now I'm a more intense VTuber fan than I was before, and they're all I watch.
The interest in Hololive just never really came back. Tried Fuwamoco. They're cute, and I have nothing against them, but their super seiso style of content is just kinda boring to me. And the rest of Holo En is a trainwreck.
Maybe I'd consider watching some of the Holo JP girls, but my Japanese isn't good enough yet.
