A vast majority of all Myth and to a lesser extent Promise subs are dead. They're from people who were desperate for any kind of entertainment they could find during the pandemic. Many of them likely don't even watch vtubers in general anymore. Even if every single person who still keeps a close eye on her activity unsubscribed from her right this second it likely wouldn't even drop her below 4m.

In many cases a vast majority of money made isn't from streaming. It's from licensing, merchandising, etc. Gura, despite not streaming, still makes a fuckton of money from merchandise because she is a distinct and cute character. Cover still uses her character to advertise in Japan even though she's not even in the JP branch and doesn't stream during peak JP hours. Japs fucking love her design so she doesn't actually have to do anything to have value for the company. To call her the Hololive "mascot" wouldn't be an exaggeration. Gura's mere existence is a benefit to Cover.

Cover won't fire their 4 million subs vtuber which explains the trench warfare that has been going on with Gura for the past 18 months. Management is furious and even though her character is valuable for merch they're allowing hundreds of negative comments from antis to stay up on her recent 3rd year anniversary VOD. They could easily delete those comments but the fighting has put them in a horrible mood so they are no longer moderating her YouTube channel.

I remember seeing a clip of Kiara a looong time ago, she is not someone i follow closely, but this one clip got me interested...
It was about someone who sent a SC to her, and said they had terminal cancer, and they were bedridden in the hospital so they were spending their final moments watching her...
She immediatly became distressed about it and her chat quickly started to say to her to ignore it, that it was a troll playing a prank on her and all that...
And her response really surprised me, she said something like:

I'm telling all this because i'm seeing so many inconsiderate and harshly worded thoughts turned into comments in here, when we really don't know what is going on with Gura...
I've watched those last collab streams this month and those anniversary streams the last one, something is clearly off in her presentation, and that added to some episodes in the past and she having directly said a while ago that she went to a doctor and got some not good news, all that makes me worry that she may be having some real health problems...
Well, maybe not right? Maybe she is just a jerk, lazy, hates her fans and all that... but maybe it is not the case... maybe she really is going through some tough times, maybe she is scared and sad, and don't wanna talk about it or have people talking about it weighting on her mind...
Maybe, at a small chance, this is the case, and if so, as Kiara did back then, this is how i'll guide my judgment, and until we do know what's really going on, i'll be respectful, supportive, and i can't help but worry a bit... hopefuly she will be fine and back soon...

We are most likely never going to get a real answer from Gura since the Hololive NDA limits what they can say. That is one of the worst aspects of corpo vtubers that management sets the narrative and talents get into major trouble if they don't follow the script.
