In those cases I'm actually happy that they stopped using their old outfit in normal streams because not only do the new ones look better, but they're also more personal to them as they have more inputs AND oftentimes incorporate their own streaming history into the very outfit.

I think the saddest thing is when they finally do use their original outfit again, it's for a sponsored stream so you know management forced them to use it for brand recognition. So can Nene too actually since she's an alien so she can always pull the "alien biology" card. For normal humans like Marine and Matsuri however I can't think of anyway to justify them. Plastic surgery doesn't work as they can switch outfit at will.

According to Anya's mama, she was never meant to be an oppai loli. The rigger is the same one that fucked up Gura, as well as the one that fucked up Coco and Matsuri's original models, so this is par for the course for them.
While I do think Anya as a sassy oppai loli fits her better, it's not her fault that the rigger was retarded and didn't check with Anya OR the original artist before giving her fat tits.

If they wanted to fix it they should have done it before it shipped out. If it was actually a mistake I'm sure one of them would have recognized it before that point.

What if Okayu was a cat girl, became fairly popular, and just a year later shows up on stream as a dog girl suddenly, and says "Oh yeah it turns out my initial design was a mistake, hahaha, it was just a printer error, so this is the new me now, yeah that's just how it is". And any interactions or dynamics she had as a cat girl suddenly get washed away, and fans are left either confused or missing out, like something they wanted was just kinda destroyed for no reason. And when they said why this was an issue other fans just say "Well the company has the right to fix their mistake, so suck it up", no that's kind of an issue. I can see why people might have problem with hololive playing this loose with their character concept but hololive is not meant to be this realistic serious anime or whatever so in my mind even if they pull bullshits like characters literally transforming into another species I don't have any problem with it inherently. The only time I do have a problem with alt outfits is when they don't look appealing to me, but that's very personal and biased. Otherwise, if they like their alt outfits better than the old one and it makes them happier, then so be it.

Goku still wears his old Gi sometimes, he isn't ashamed of his orange suit. Its kinda clear in some cases when a VTuber puts up with a design until they finally get an out, and then never go back to the original model. They never go back to their original design unless they're forced to for a paid promotion.

Really, Flare probably didn't want to use it. And hololive probably were aware since she always wore the NY costume since getting it until the other costume was given. New outfit is just "normal girl with pointy ears". Even New Years outfit is "Japanese looking girl", which is something I know they're biased towards wanting to be, but its odd when its not in character to be that. When you're supposed to be "somewhat" playing a western fantasy character, but instead you want to dress up in a Japanese kimono, or wear just normal clothes. And you kinda lose your niche along the way.

Its when they start to lose their niche or the niche starts to become really confused that its an issue.

Nene actually has a reason for the change and she had to change legally, so no one really blamed her for it. Due to Hololive's increasing tensions with China. While Flare just kinda doesn't want to play a character after awhile, and slowly shifts her model to just wearing normal clothes, doesn't like the elf aesthetic at all, eventually asks to have her character model's ears made more human-like, soon enough her character is just "slightly ganguro girl".

Roboco - Is a robot, so functional animal ears can very well be high-tech robot parts.
Matsuri - She's GOD. So growing cat ears at will should be trivial for her.
Aqua - As said in her bio, she's a "virtual maid", meaning she's a virtual being. This means she should be able to easily change herself into a cat.
Shion - Magic. Also witches traditionally can transform into cats.
Rushia - Being a necromancer probably means she can use some magic in general too.
