SDXL is just awful. Most good 1.5 models are trained on 768x768 by the way, not 512x512.
I have yet to see a SDXL gen that is even comparable to the better 1.5 outputs.
Just let it die so we can get a better model that doesn't invalidate a year of progress.

the base outputs are pretty bad, you need a pretty hefty negative prompt (possibly a negative embed too), plus your prompt should include an artist name from the training dataset to guide the style. this is an XL gen with the model >>60216359
overall XL anime models are still really shit, but higher resolution models feel like the the next step toward better quality gens. there's only so much you can do by loading a million extensions to tardwrangle the generation, upscaling tiny outputs and hoping for the best

HLL usually uses about 100-200k images and 10-15 epochs. If SDXL requires significantly longer training time, I see no reason to touch it.
SDXL will never be good anyway, people who made it did everything wrong. Its VAE is shit (4 channel on picrel is SDXL), 2 text encoders are shit, unet and idea of using refiner is also shit

Yup, once you merge them in it's baked in the model and requires no calls in the prompt (other than the character names ofc, but that's a given), A user wouldn't need to have the loras neither to use it and get the look, which is why I often bake models out of styles that different anons share so that it's plug and play.

I'll play around with it when the time comes.
How does it affect the text encoder? HLL has additional prompts compared to NAI or other models (the outfit prompts for example).
With HLL5B one of my merging steps is grabbing the encoder and putting it on my merged model and that has consistently given me better results.

It is, but it's not accurate, I don't know if it's a skill issue, but with default settings it doesn't reproduce the same effect as in a prompt, here's an example, first picture is with the loras used normally, and second is with a merged version, same seed.

I wouldn't have guessed either but it was originally in one of the megas or the goldmine, can't remember, was very early days for me and I had no idea what I was doing but it was called Darkest Dungeon Style there so nabbed it. There is one called DarkestDungeonV2 on Civit but it looks very different and seems to be more about the characters and the debuff stances, iconography, etc.

(I'm trying something new right now. There is an extension out there called FreeU, (https://github.com/ljleb/sd-webui-freeu)) which purports to increase image generation quality without any modification/training to the base model. From my testing this appears to work incredibly well. However, it does change image generation right from the start, so if you want the initial shot composition that you get from your model, you have to adjust when the effect happens.)

There's so many sliders on this thing and I was a bit overwhelmed so I just tried the 3 presets. Yes, I know they're recommendations for different SD versions, but it seemed like an alright way to just test a few configs without having to understand what any of the options actually were.
Left to right is disabled, SD1.4 preset, SD2.1 preset, and SDXL preset. Honestly I think I like the disabled the most so I'm not sure I'll use this much but nice to know about regardless

Transition Smoothness
(By default start at step and stop at step are values from 0 to 1 which just control the percentage)
(Transition smoothness controls if it just turns on instantly or if it turns on gradually. 0 is instant, 1 is fully gradual. This Desmos graph explains it more visually as well. https://www.desmos.com/calculator/ngcqo5ictm))
If you like your model as is, I would recommend setting start step to something like 0.25 and then playing with transition smoothness (a good value to start at would be 0.5)
