On the contrary, I don't think it's bland at all. Too many indies feel the need to overcompensate by just throwing all kinds of wacky shit onto their model with billions of teensy details that just make it look cluttered and confusing. There's a niceness to the simplicity, and the ear hearts are what makes it look unique. Freckles as well are relatively uncommon. A good model will look good with minimal elements, and it makes it less intimidating for artists to draw as well.
