My oshi was Suisei btw. I think it's a bit more complicated than that, especially when the genre is so subdivided. You can have the "idol" side in Holo where it's just as you stated similar to real 3d idols, but even in 3d land, a good portion of the fanbase are male simps who coom at the thought of shaking hands with their oshi and fantasize about dating them.
On the other hand, a good portion of vtubing ends up being parasocial central with GFE becoming a key selling point for most fans. Considering this side possibly comprises an even larger share of the market than idol streamers, it's hard to really discount how much of this "hobby" and "community" actually are unironic loners who want a 2d anime GF to pamper them. It's similar to the whole concept of react content: you want a friend/someone to watch a cool video with you, except in vtubing she happens to be a cute anime girl who roleplays as your friend (RIP fauna) or GF.
