How much have you improved with your reps in the past year?

>> No.5942969

I can read most kana.

>>5942602
quite a bit, tho I can't write for shit, I've forgotten how to write most kana even though I read it pretty naturally at this point. the weak point of learning by immersion I suppose

>> No.5943373

i have good days and really bad days. with enough visual context I can follow most gameplay streams.

precious little and yet i've still improved more in the last half year than korone has

Process of n4 but man I fell off for 2 months cause of work and now my Anki reps are higher than 1000

Hardcore grinded for like a month, month and a half. I can at least get into watching japanese clips with subs for some things I never see get covered by western clippers. So it's a nice point to chill at before going all in again.

I can follow the general gist of a conversation in most streams. I felt really proud when I managed to fully understand Coco and Noel during her live3D.

A year ago it would take me about over an hour to read a chapter of Yotsuba. Now in an hour I can probably read about 15+ chapters of Tokyo Revengers.

I'm getting to elementary schooler kanji, have baby vocabulary and no grammar.
I'll slowly get there bros. Eventually...

I can read hard VNs with look ups, follow sentences in a stream if I pay attention. collabs filter me.

I flunked my bachelors and I'm going to take a break and join the workforce again for a year. In my free time I'll be working my ass off doing reps this year and hope I'll be able to learn a couple hundred of kanji and getting somewhat conversationally fluent. Wish me luck.

>> No.5945876

Less than I hoped because I have no-one to practice with. Autistic brain doesn't like to learn when it's only me. I'll get there eventually, it'll just take me 3x as long, probably.

I'm learning Kanji. I can vaguely understand some videos and pick up some sentences (like omega sisters) but hearing two people talk on stream can still be near impossible to follow. Not bad considering I started about 4 months ago. I always knew Hiragana though so in some ways it has been years...

Anyone have good recommendations for how to start learning? I took classes in college a long time ago that used the Genki textbook, but I wasn't super impressed with it. There's so much clickbait crap out there now, it makes finding real info a pain.

Bro literally just watch holostreams all day every day and you'll become fluent. It's easy when you're autistic.

just watch a ton of holo streams and read. and you can do wanikani or anki on the side to speed up the kanji/vocab process

find a cheap local community college course if you can
otherwise, grab a book for some grammar, and a flashcard software like anki for vocab practice

I appreciate the direction, certainly, however, hat's with me factoring it in. My brain requires active engagement, so I'm legit just repeating shit and writing lines of kana and the VERY few Kanji I can identify/have memorized as I believe I hear them, then correcting afterwards.

I'm too lazy to set up that software with flash cards like the guide from jp suggests, can't I just consume japanese media like a normal student does and learn that way?

how did you manage to get in during the plandemic and how long did you save money for?

>> No.5947846

I'm taking it easy these past weeks cuz many things are happening in my life. But i think it's going pretty good, i memorized a lot of kanji, my grammar is pretty basic and my vocab is baby tier. When i got all my shit together i'll do my reps seriously again

>> No.5947971

I followed what wareya suggested in the past. Memorize kana, read through Tae Kim to pickup some basic words and grammar rules and then jumped into reading my first visual novel using Yomichan that interested me which was Ley Line. It was really hard and tedious at first but it was a nice feeling when I'd read an entire sentence without needing a look up.
I also made flash cards in Anki from words I'd see in the game. I used the setup from the anime cards website since other people seemed to have success with it on /jp/.

One of the two programs I applied for had appealed to the Japanese government to allow for foreigners to be granted student visas specifically for the purpose of attending language schools. Just started accepting new applicants in January. Was a wagie for 3 years before everything closed down and just stockpiled spare funds, with the stimulus money putting me over the edge needed for a 12-18 month application.

yeah you gotta do your SRS every day or else that will happen to you. to get out of the pit you can turn off new cards and set your max review cards per day to like 100 or something, and work through it until you no longer have a massive backlog of reviews. you'll get really weird next dates on your cards in the process (like it'll say the word will be due again in like 3+ months or over a year or smth) but that's just how the SRS works
