They improved by not having a pointless sense of urgency which I approve but they failed to make it an interesting thing to do in the process. That's nearly the only case where we know the direct outcome of not even a duel but a 1v50 fight. That doesn't mean Michigan is a bad pilot either. Rusty is just that good.

I don't think that was it at all. He is the stereotypical "drill sergeant", asshole who pushes his soldiers to do their best but also ultimately cares for them. Despite him treating Iguazu like shit, he still sees him as a good pilot so he volunteers him for a difficult mission which also saw head of Vespers and one of their ace pilots as well as the super merc with a perfect record. Iguazu is just a little bitch even during that mission. It shows a lot in Michigan's own mission too - when it comes to a fight to death, he gives everyone an option to peace out but his own troops are willing to follow him to the very end. You also can very clearly see that he's very familiar with the soldiers he leads - he knows them all by name to react to them saying dumb shit on the fly. Compare that to Snail who sees everyone besides himself as expendables and Freud who doesn't give a single fuck about anything besides finding a good opponent. Also you need to separate gameplay difficulty from "lore" difficulty. Gameplay-wise, Ayre is by far the hardest boss in game and Walter is a complete joke but I'm pretty sure they're both supposed to be on equal level in lore.

Earthbound was only a problem for Mori because she needed a Wii U for it, and more specifically she needed a US region Wii U to play in English.
After her playthrough, though, Nintendo released it on Switch which isn't region locked so it would be easy to get now.
