Mostly a time limit. I knew what I had to write but getting the prose to be presentable was too time consuming and I was way too far away from the finish line. If I had been writing the same story since the beginning of August I would have finished in time, but I kept jumping from story to story because each one kept snowballing out of control. It started with an existing Lamy WIP, then I started a new Holox fic, then jumped to a story about making out with Iroha but by then the deadline was too close.

so i did send in the incomplete submission. but if its helpful i can talk about factors that went into not making the deadline i think.

1. time management. i thought i did pretty well overall, but particularly these last two days squandered a lot of it. as the general haze from the writing frenzy dies down a bit, it was unrealistic for me to think part v could be a one day thing. part iii i actually did in one long marathon, but honestly, it was like 2 continuous days of caffeine and sperging. at any rate, i got cocky thinking i could finish part v with a one or two day marathon session.

2. i think most pertinent for any writer, though, is whether you're... correctly choosing your threshold for what's good enough to put down to paper for a first draft. i actually think "write or die" bullshit has gotten way too much credence in creative writing to the point that it seems like masochism is encouraged.

personally, i do think that sometimes moving your hands without jogging your brain is another way of procrastinating. if you're just throwing away a lot of drafts, you need to consider shifting over more to the 'thoughtful consideration' mode, so you can clearly see the issues that need to be solved instead of trying to brute force them.

what's hard is that how you cook changes what you put out, and once you know something reliably works it's really hard to trust any changes to your MO. it seems to me writers usually get a good sense of how often inspiration hits them, and subconsciously according to a sort of internal 'inspiration schedule.' alterations to the schedule makes a writer feel like they're gonna miss a random inspiration event.

for my part, this contest made me realize that for this type of writing, i really am not min maxing properly as far as trusting a somewhat inartful first draft to suffice for something i can springboard off of later. i would suspect most people are similar to me.

3. my oshi was really cute in a few streams and i spent more time watching her than i intended during this period

The more time I spend on it though, the longer I'm gonna feel that gnawing itch to get back to my main series. Either way, I think it's gonna be a really cute piece that will be perfect to end the summer with, so I'll give it the attention and detail it deserves. Overall I'm super happy with the participation of the contest and that I even managed to write something within it's time frame that wasn't a direct chapter iteration for my main series. I'm pretty happy that the contest and the thread inspired me to write that Shiori smut piece, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

Gonna try to type in actual proper caps and punctuation for my serious advice. Friend of mine made picrel for gamedev. Applies very well to any longform project, and pretty well to the kind of short medium term project that was this contest. In one sense you could say a lot of writers have a hard time leaving that prototyping phase. Basically, you think of two possible branches for the issue you're having. If it's 1. genuine self doubt, you just have to overcome that psychological hurdle any way that you can. Typically from showing your work to others and gaining comfort with your own writing and learning to see your own virtues. But let's treat it like it's a real logistical issue.

2. My works are not coming together, and I'm not sure why. Am I just making bad ideas from the start? Am I just not seeing things through? Writing paralysis starts here. The fear that you're clinging to a sinking ship starts mixing and clashing with the fear that you're constantly killing your babies before they get a chance to walk. Here's the answer.

For any piece you make, there is some form of it that exists in the ether that is good. In fact, there are probably lots and lots of forms and versions of it that are good. You can be honest with yourself and say if you think or don't think you can reach any of them, but you do need to adopt an abundance mentality. Not only does a good version of a piece exist, but numerous numerous numerous good versions exist, with a whole range of artistic decisions that produce a good outcome. If each artistic decision you make for a piece (how lewd? happy end, bad end? glasses no glasses? self insert or cgdct?) is a door you walk through, there are hundreds of "final doors" that are worth going through at the very end, and millions and billions of intersecting routes you can go through to get to any of them. The question isn't whether a piece has something worth a damn in it. The real question is do you care enough to find it?

That isn't a rhetorical question. Maybe you don't. Not every story idea that runs past our brains, that we outline and that we start are actually interesting enough to deserve our full attention for the short time we're on this Earth. It's a genuine honest decision you have to make based on you.

If you like something, but feel like it's beyond your capabilities, then it's a reach, like a reach school for a highschool student looking at colleges. Figure out how much of a reach it is for you. Is it, if I put my mind to it for two days I think I can figure out what's wrong? Or is it, I need to study up for a month to understand fundamentally the artistic bs underlying this piece? Reaching is a good thing, even when you fail to grab it. Reaching and occasionally grasping is how we grow fastest as writers. Remember the time you spend figuring out what's wrong isn't the same as actually writing the thing. If it's something well within your capabilities, then guesstimate how long it'll take and you'll probably underestimate how long it'll take because like 100 writers on this planet are good at making personal timelines. I'm not one of them. You may never get good at it, but you have to always strive to get better at it than you are.

This post is getting long so I'll stop here, but these are the kinds of thought processes I think are helpful for any writer, but especially beginners trying to get past the initial hiccups. I hope you don't give up on your writing and keep trying anon.

This. Feedback is your greatest gift. You'll only stop improving as a writer when you choose not to try to anymore. Even writers with lots of experience are always struggling with certain aspects and challenging themselves to do better. You may not pull it off without a hitch, but you'll get a little better each time. The key is to try and not get too discouraged and never give up. Write because you enjoy it, and want to put the story out there that you want to see in the world.

Initially, I was going to have this first chapter be much longer, with you and Marine getting a ship, crew, and end with the first lead to the mystery. I stopped where I did because I wasn't sure if I wanted to have chapter 1 be this big thing or just divide it into two chapters, hence the vague ending. It's okay to be a virgin smut writer if you have experience with good works in the genre. Smut sex is supposed to be idealised (aside from sometimes being broken in a specific way for the story), so letting irl experience influence the story can help or hurt but isn't decisive.
The biggest upside I can see is being able to break out of stereotypes for more specific, often-flanderized fetishes.

Well shit, this was fantastic. I’m a fluff fag through and through so this hit the spot for me, and I also love shortstacks so I’m probably biased. This is currently a strong contender for my favourite entry. The jokes got a few chuckles out of me, I loved how you wrote Anya’s slightly ESL speech and the epilogue was the exact kind of stuff I like to see at the end of a story. The date might have relied on sequence breaks a bit too much, but that’s really only a minor gripe. I know it was a SFW fic, but it felt a bit like Anya’s horniness didn’t come through enough, as in her thoughts from the mind reading and her actions didn’t match. I think her horniness should have been implied more during and after the date so the crystal would have more relevance. There were also a few grammar issues, but that’s understandable since you were under a time limit. Overall I loved this from start to end, I’m definitely going to read it again sometime.

Oh yeah, I could absolutely see that working. Especially since black hair and blue hair are kind of cousins in the "hair color meant to represent the ordinary" at least in anime.
As for natural black hair for alt!Suisei that never really sat right with me conceptually since she's meant to mirror ours, well unless it's part of a reveal that our Suisei isn't so different and also has black roots ala the contest suicest fic, and it's like an act 2 twist that maybe they weren't so different all along... Either that or it's part of some "She's not accepting her real self" kind of arc and it's actually a sign that she's forcing herself to be "Suisei" despite her own talents not fitting in the role she wants to be in which is why her channel in the alt!universe wasn't doing too hot.
Huh. Weirdly enough both of those narrative arcs feel like the kind of thing that'd fit in completely opposite stories. The first seems like it would be in a story where she accepts that she's this worlds Suisei now and learns to accept that she woke up in her dream world and should enjoy living in it, while the second feels like it would work in a fic where she gets knocked back to her own world but learns to adapt and save her career because she's accepted who she really is.

Having even a vague idea important. 2. what information drip happens in this section? 3. Emotional state change in section? Honestly that idea always seemed it would be a comedy with romance and or drama. At most the setting would be as fantastic as those villainess Isekai settings where there's some magic elements but for the most part shit is European fantasy as viewed by Japan. Personally, I don't really find the idea of having several alts very enticing. Going back to the original prompt, the point was that alt!Suisei had already overtook Suisei's life. And the main focus was about her struggling to keep everything from falling apart due to self-destructive habits she formed in her original world. It depends. If you're doing this magical girl thing then that role of Suisei's secret keeper and manager can respectively be split off to Anemachi and an OC manager-san. While the idea of alt!Suisei in our timeline was more geared for a self/reader insert, the magical girl thing kind of makes it a more personal narrative for Suisei so she can absolutely fit in as the pov character for her own fic if you take the magical girl route for adapting this idea.

I know you said to disregard that comment but I think it is valid because I did think about that angle. The only reason I didn't mention it was because I wanted there to be some stakes when having to deal with yammers.

The Sweeney Todd route would be one routed in fear for anon's own life. Something like 'If I don't appease her hunger, she's gonna snack on me next' and just how anon's peaceful life got turned upside down all of a sudden.

The route where anon willingly lets Ayame take bites of him would allow for more connection and romance I believe, but of course, anon can't keep giving forever and Ayame wouldn't want to eat someone whole if she comes to care and love them, but still has to feed somehow. Her feasting on animals would remove those stakes and make for a pretty decent slice of life fic, where you learn to hunt with Ayame and such but I don't what else I could do with it.

Anyway, I came up with this idea about 2 years ago and haven't touched it since.
