anyway ok sorry fags i'm about to sperg out. just scroll past if you dont want to read shit. dragonball from the saiyan saga through the cell saga is very thematically coherent, and so much of its themes are directly stated by the show and yet people for some reason just do not understand them.

going super saiyan is about accepting the responsibility of the martial spirit. the protector. when raditz comes down to earth, goku is introduced to his alien lineage for the first time. he doesn't have dramatic feelings about it, but he doesn't really grasp its implications at first. until this point in dragon ball, all of goku's powerups and experiences have centered around mystical experiences, and in fact, right before fighting vegeta he has one last major mystical experience. he experiences literal death and runs along snake way. i will also admit i forget what things are filler at this point, but i know snake way is canon. he trains with king kai, and this sets up the 'ultimate' saiyan showdown between the saiyan who became an earthling, and mastered its spiritual world, and the saiyan who is wearing a technological super power suit, has an energy reading item, who can actually control his transformation into the oozaru. goku actually losing to vegeta (goku lost the fight desu. vegeta gets repelled, but he beat goku people always fucking forget that) is specifically because he lost what made him a saiyan. his tail.

again, i really dont remember canon, so forgive me if a few arguments upcoming are bs. but goku is delayed in following krillin and gohan to namek. on the way there, he makes use of the gravity machine on the spaceship. goku is beginning to use the kind of martially focused technology that defines his race. people forget this. the saiyans are not just brutes. they're techno brutes. a lot of that is friezas influence but whatever. also, at this point, goku zenkais a bunch, a plot point that later disappears but is really important in the saiyan saga. by nearing death, saiyans can vastly increase their power level. this is a form of self mastery. saiyans tow the line between life and death. goku actually... just dies a bunch.

by the time goku faces off against frieza he's started to grasp his saiyan lineage. there's a lot more stuff for this but i want to get to cell saga, but anyway vegeta zenkais and thinks he can match frieza, he can't, vegeta dies, and vegeta gives him a heartfelt wish to defeat frieza for the saiyan race. goku accepts this onus but doesn't know what it means just yet. he fights frieza well, better than anyone else, but ultimately gets his shit kicked in.

it's at this point, after spirit bomb, after frieza kills krillin, that the trigger to super saiyan is revealed. it is true, righteous anger.

this is a great point and it is the actual truth. the cell saga is the point where goku most shows his flaws as a person. he gambles with the safety of earth, and it almost destroys the earth because goku did not fundamentally understand his son. that is where the grain of truth of hurr durr goku bad father comes from. for this goku once again pays with his life. i understand that by this point the currency of life and death in dragonball seems really weak, but it's worth saying he's not in their lives for seven years because of it.

anyway, back to super saiyan. no saiyan has ever achieved it. goku also hadn't achieved it. what was it about goku that made him the first? actually, let me get something out of the way. if super saiyan is all about righteous anger how did vegeta achieve it?

look, this is a bit of a copout, but i'm gonna stick to it. obviously all the stuff i'm talking about tows the line with allegory. what happens is just that super saiyan is the four minute mile. a little fun fact about the four minute mile is that it was thought impossible, but now it's regularly achieved by highschoolers. but what's especially funny is the second person to ever run it... was in the same race as the guy everyone remembers. he also broke the four minute mile in that race. he just didnt win the race.

once super saiyan is achieved, it's demystified, and vegeta himself is talented enough and enough of a warrior to break through another one of his limits. it's as simple as that. is that a cop out? yeah i guess.

anyway, goku going super saiyan for the first time comes because he accepts his true lineage, his true martial spirit, his status as a warrior. he reconciles the kindness he learned as an earthling with the warrior heart of the saiyans. when goku becomes super saiyan there is a notable change in how he acts and carries himself. he's always been earth's protector, but he takes on this mysterious and enigmatic quality he hadn't had before.

Cell is The Enemy Within. He is of course a dna organism with everyone's DNA. that's why he has regeneration like piccolo. that's why he uses all the attacks of the protagonists. in fact the only attack he doesn't use is instant transmission.

because cell is defined by his dna, he is most defined by his saiyan blood. that's why instead of destroying the world when he has ample opportunity, he decides to run a tournament.

well anon, what other saiyan follies are there?

ultra super saiyan as a mistaken misguided evolution of super saiyan is demonstrative of folly. it shows how trunks and vegeta achieved super saiyan 'the wrong way.' by rage. i forget if canon again, but theres a scene of vegeta becoming super saiyan essentially how of envy and jealousy. trunks... you know he's motivated by future gohan's death which is pure. but as he tries to become stronger, he just follows his father.

but even vegeta is smart enough to know that ultra super saiyan 2 is a dumb idea. this is a demonstration of lack of internal mastery. trunks imagines himself superior to his father because he keeps adding in more and more power. but vegeta realized this was a dead end since he's a warrior with good instincts. both vegeta and trunks fail the next level of self mastery.

which brings us to full power super saiyan which, fyi, both goku and gohan achieve. people don't remember this but gohan even before going super saiyan 2 is the second strongest person at the cell games. goku has fundamentally taught him how to control the anger that comes with super saiyan, and how to achieve serenity even in that form. this is the difference between goku and vegeta at this point, owing to his experience as an earthling. goku understands that you cannot simply get powerful by increasing your anger and emotions. you have to perfectly control it. at ths point goku and gohan have mastered it so well they literally spend the remaining days till the cell games transformed.

what follows is in many senses the most tragic part of gohan's arc. gohan achieves super saiyan 2 by seeing the destruction of the nature loving android 16, and imagines a bird being killed. this is what pushes gohan to super saiyan 2, when not even goku could achieve it. goku was driven by righteous anger for his friend. but gohan was driven by true righteous anger for the world, for nature itself, and the realization that cell, an abomination tech experiment dna mix, will destroy nature is what ultimately lets him ascend.

this brings the second part of gohan goku fails to predict. when gohan turns super saiyan 2, he turns arrogant and sadistic. he fails to finish of cell quickly as he should, and this endangers the world.

why was gohan, the gentlest of them all, acting almost like vegeta? again, it's because gohan's bottomless power also represents a bottomless pit within gohan. when gohan falls into that pit, he FALLS into it. the tragedy of the cell saga is that he is forced to do so for the safety of earth.

what follows is gohan killing the cell jrs. cell jrs are little shits who do not deserve sympathy, so dont mistake what im saying here. whats important is the imagery of gohan killing them. it's some of the most macabre imagery in the series.

the saibamen do not die like this. nothing in the series does. gohan simply punches them in half, and they fall apart visibly. visually, it looks like gohan is killing children.

again, gohan is not doing anything wrong. but the calllousedness he needs to adopt is so starkly opposed to his gentle nature that it's a complete tragedy.

gohan does not know how to control his anger because he has never truly been angry. this is the second thing that goku fails to understand about his son.

and that's mostly it. goku realizes his folly and he manages to wrap things up ok, but he does pay for it with his life. no goku is not a bad father by choosing not to be revived. goku is following the proper way of the world.

A prime example of getting truly angry is simply him becoming Super Saiyan. The entire time when Goku first went Super Saiyan he was trying to control his anger. Even tells Gohan to fuck off before he loses his sanity completely. And when he finally does, and Frieza spits on his face and on his gift of mercy, he completely loses it, and the second he realizes what he did he looks extremely regretful.

Gohan's always been an extremely inconsistent character. He may not like fighting like Goku or Vegeta does, but he always fought if needed, and always was willing to go fight for the sake of protecting the earth or for a good cause, like going to Namek, where he even told Chi Chi to fuck off. But suddenly Cell happens and he doesn't want to fight, despite Cell being an extreme threat, to the point he even refuses to let himself be pummeled out like a sandbag without fighting back at all.
And it's the same afterwards with him. Despite Goku sacrificing himself and passing the mantle of protector of earth to him he simply stops training completely. And then it happens again, and again, and again. And he even spouts horribly irresponsible things like "oh there's no point in training Goku or Vegeta will be there to deal with it", until they aren't, which has happened a few times already, and yet he still doesn't learn.
