I mean, you can have the melody played lower or higher if you want to have a frame on where to sing it simultaneously but then it's just empty. Vocals in a majority of music are the main melody and it's supported by the chords played underneath it, strummed or arpeggiated. It does take a bit of coordination to play a rhythm underneath that melodic line but once you get used to it it becomes second nature. Also, the parts in between the verse and chorus is usually when the melody switches from the voice to the instrument and you also have more room to play around with it as well. Music is much organized like poetry, until you get into the autistic details and bend the rules, that's when it gets really interesting.
