Then some of those will check out the other channels and maybe decide if they prefer any of them, while still being subscribed to Gura. It's pretty simple. I find it amusing how people try to find any and all explanations apart from the obvious one - she really is that good. You can debate algorithms or ye olde 'tard opinion that it's just loli appeal, but none of that is true. She's an excellent entertainer with boatloads of talent, she puts in the effort and her whole personality is simply wonderful.

Every stream, hours before she begins there's somewhere between 2k to 5k people just chatting and waiting. That's what being genuinely popular looks like. My bet isn't that she's an entry point into EN vtubers, but for a lot of people she's the only one they like even after seeing others through recommendations and/or collabs.

But fuck numbers. Gura herself doesn't care about that. It's a meaningless metric. Kizuna has assloads of subscribers but look at the board - nobody is ever talking about her, but other vtubers. Lily Hops has a thread up essentially at all times as an indie, and has a dedicated fanbase that likes her. So do many other girls. Even Kizuna herself faded from my view back before the VA clusterfuck because of Kaguya Luna. Luna was a vastly more entertaining vtuber than Kizuna even BEFORE SHTF.

Simply put numbers can and do give a false impression because when you have a genuine fanbase they stick with you. I believe Gura will have the same experience, her growth is probably lower than the numbers show but that's just how this game works. Actual fans stick around and their numbers grow slowly and imperceptibly, while tourists barge in and leave after a while.

YouTube is obsessed with promoting a “brand friendly” platform, so one aspect of it is making sure to promote the channels with big numbers the most. I assume their mentality is that the controversial channels will get snuffed out before they reach the 1M threshold. All of the other girls will reach this point eventually. Gura just got the head start because HER channel was already past 1M, and the big audience transferred over.
It’s almost kind of scary how 90% of people will just watch whatever YouTube promotes. If you look at Gura’s numbers compared to the other girls, it’s evident that some of the viewers don’t even bother to check out other holo EN girls.
