Some ESLs are fine, but I and I'm sure most other viewers have a hard time connecting with ESLs not just because of their freaky accents but also because they aren't easily relatable. Often time there is no common interests or common cultural connection there. They didn't grow up the same way, so obviously they have a completely different cultural foundation from which they are working and building off of, which causes most fans to just lose interest. They have just entirely different weird interests that only very hyperspecific niche audiences can even hope to connect with. When will these companies learn that it's not just about knowing the English language, it's also about being able to connect to the audience on some level as well? And the sad part is how these people are being hired for "knowing English" yet they don't even speak it that well. Some of them aren't even fucking fluent.
Tenma from Phase Connect strikes me as a good example of an ESL because, despite her accent that can sound incomprehensible if you're not used to it, she's a huge fucking westaboo so not only does she have the Japanese cultural foundation she grew up on but also American and European things she is interesed in, so she can be extremely engaging with her audience by knowing of all this different shit
