I like the song very much. The thing that I liked about is the progression and lore she placed into it. She made it into a conversation. Her emotions matched with the progression of the music. The lyrics also are very well written. This may not be what you wanted given that she is famous for singing a lot of pop melodic songs however, it is obvious that she wanted to make a statement with this song. The impactful beats along with her line readings were really good. I can totally see a whole anime episode just with her going crazy over the voices in her head and slowly trying to console herself that she has to live it and not be ashamed of it. I'm not a chumbud but I definitely am now. She's a natural storyteller.

You can feel her anger and frustrations in some lines that she doesn't want to conform to whatever people thinks of her, and that she'll just do what she wants because she wants to live her life to the fullest. Mixed feelings here. It seems to grow on you with repeated listening however. The lyrics are great, I really liked them and I understand where she's coming from and what she's trying to get across. I liked the addition of Greek and the fact it's in Japanese for the most part isn't a problem at all. English isn't my native language either.

I'm actually thinking I'm just not suited for this style of music. While I do get early 2000s chuuni vibes, and the switching between light/dark obviously follows the lyrics and meaning of the song and is appropriate to the theme I also find it offputting from a listeners perspective, because it breaks the flow of the song. But on the other hand modern zoomer music is utterly incomprehensible to me and is essentially just noise to me, so I'm wondering if this is just something truly geared towards younger audiences who are now "into music" and this is the kind of thing that's actually familiar to them or is their thing.

I think the song is overprocessed. I think it misses an important point, so I'll try to make this my main and most important argument. I'm "too old" and experienced to be tied up by trivialities such as genre, and listen to everything from my own chuuni days (black metal) to 80s electro pop (Depeche Mode for instance) to classical music (Prokofiev). Point is I'm not tied to a specific type. Anyway, the main point:

Gura's voice is unlike any other voice I've ever heard in my life. No female singer in the West, living or dead, is as good as Gura. Absolutely no one. Not a single one. Gura's voice goes beyond even that. It's downright magical, hypnotic at times, and seems to influence the nervous system. I am dead serious. Because of Gura I realized why bards and singing in general were held in such a high regard in pre-christian Europe, and why magical power was ascribed to them. I now understand why so many cultures literally have the god or gods "sing reality into existence." I think the Japanese don't grasp this, they don't understand that Gura's voice isn't just kawaii, but something unheard of in the West - not only in living memory but at least since recorded music exists. I'm explicitly saying that I know of no other singer in the last 100+ years that I have heard who has this kind of singing ability. I am saying that this is the first time in my life that I have heard her kind of voice, and that I can't even explain how unique and otherworldly it is. Since the Japanese are used to "cute" voices I think they don't realize how extremely odd and extremely appealing she sounds to us. There is simply NOBODY who sounds like Gura and she sounds like nobody else. She is thoroughly unique. Her voice is like liquid silver. It is a perfect instrument.

Her voice needs to be the main focus. Genre is irrelevant, but please don't mangle her voice. She doesn't need any gimmick, embellishments or fixing in that regard. Build the songs around her voice, don't conform her voice to the song but the song to her voice. Always. Again - her voice is a perfect instrument. Anything you add to it is superfluous and detrimental.

In the end, the song doesn't make or break Gura. I am honestly kinda relieved that I didn't like it 100%. It means there's ample room and time for her to grow and the people around her to learn. As my people say - "First kittens are always thrown into the river."

To go back a bit, the addition of Greek and that particular Med/middle eastern/Balkan melos was nice flavoring and yeah, you didn't go wrong in playing with such concepts. I'll shut up now.

The more I listen to it the more I like it. I too would have preferred an English song but aside from that I think it works perfectly as her very first original song. The only "electronic" part is her "dark side" which is done for the theme. There is more regular singing then there is not but you just want something to complain about because you can't see the whole picture, you autistic fuck.

I like the song. The lyrics make me think of Gura, but also the anti-conformist message is pretty based at a time when shaming people into rigid conformity is being pushed as something virtuous. I love my oshi!

Thematically I think it would have been a lot better to have sung the "red" part all in english. That way the duality theme is kept. I guess most has to do with the lyricist she worked with was japanese. I just think it would have flowed better that way.

I don't know where you grow up but it's such a cliched theme. It's so cliched that it has been appropriated by faceless corps since forever. Apple has been doing it since their 1984 ad and think different slogan. Americans live with such messages throughout their upbringing.
You know what message would be rare? Self-skepticism along with skepticism of others. People have learned to distrust conformity since birth, but they have not learned to distrust their own sorry asses. That is how you end up with people falling for the fakest shit just because it tells them what they want to hear like homeopathic COVID cures.
