Set rules that you cannot spend more than 2 minutes on the gesture/figure drawing, or you can only use less than 15 strokes/lines etc.
Generally speaking, with figure drawing you should be able to capture the core essence of the pose without putting too much time into it. Look up gesture drawing - Proko on YT has some beginner-friendly videos, and there are a bunch of good texts like vilppu and bridgeman. Check the /ic/ beginner thread for resources.

Don't use straight black to shade. But do use a multiply layer with a lowered opacity over the color layer to shade. Once you have a better grasp of color theory you can play around with choosing your own color shades.
