In an RPG, the character at least gets the experience from the monsters killed in the attempt. And he can try again a little stronger just because of it. Not by buying new items.
He can try and fail again and again getting stronger each time. In you shrine/challenge example, you get nothing unless you beat the challenge. Again, drops and treasures are not character development. You can get/buy that elsewhere.

Story relevant to the character background-wise.
Metroid lacks shops and NPCs. Although you might consider the ship computer and quest-giver NPC.
