Reposting from last thread
Matsurisu:
>Worship the Festival God Matsuri
>Culture is a mix of traditional japanese with a tad of Dionysian mega festivals
>Festival is a goddess of passions, love, and desire, so sex is non restrictive and marriage bonds aren't necessarily broken by infidelity, though nobody is open about being a cheater since their wife might go full menhera and stab them to death in the streets
>as a god of passion, Matsuri was for a long time possessed of the Menhera which caused great turmoil for the Matsurisu as well as the many divine pantheonic connections she'd established
>this menhera sickness has some trace remnant in the Matsurisu and is seen both as a blessing and as a curse.
>Matsurisu use their frequent celebrations as to venerate Matsuri so that she may spare them of the menhera madness and to grant them fortune but these are done just as much to keep the population occupied.
>Matsurisu consider the tanning of their skin a source of pride that represents one's liveliness and temperament, Festival Priests, experienced warriors, and veteran drunks all boast their tanned skinned to be a show of Matsuri's personal favor.
>Raiding and bandit parties are somewhat common when a large festival has not been held for sometime and war itself is considered only one celebration amongst the many of festivals domain. In Festival Raids or War Festivals, Matsurisu indulge themselves on the spoils of war and loot, pillage, and rape to sate their appetites.
>Land is owned by Festival Lords in a somewhat feudal system, Festival Lords once warred against each other in violent war festivals until they were united under a Festival King who threw such immense and great Festivals that they brought the warring lords together. Hence forth, a Festival king governed over the Festival lands for as long as there were festivals of such greatness that the quelled the spirits of their vassal lords.
>Festival Kings are obligated to throw opulent and fantastic festivals for their lords and a Festival King who cannot reward loyal service with festivities is expected to host raiding parties to plunder or collaborate with foreign nations in some great endeavor. A festival king cannot lie complacent and those Festival Lords who find that they're more capable than the one who rules them are known to rebel and take the seat of their lord by force. While the highest seat in the Festival lands is known as the Festival King, the position can be held by those of either sex and often times a king and their consort will rule equally or behind the face of another.
>the Festival priests are the second great power in the Festival lands though they differ greatly from their lordly counterparts. There is no great church for these men and women nor an official place of worship and they're bound by no laws save for those of the desires gifted upon them by the Mother of Festivities. These priests believe in a festival without end where all desires are sated and men can fight, frolick, and fuck until contented with no responsibilities to speak of. These priests seek to embody the unending festival in both mind and body and serve to dictate the preparations of great festivals and celebrations. Like many priests of other nations, they dabble in the magical nature of chuubanite and use its abilities to conjure weapons of war as well as trinkets for celebrations, hell crackers and star cannons both come from these hedonistic alchemist and many lords offer up the bodies of young girls and boys in exchange for a supply of these wonder weapons. Some particulars of the priesthood see Matsuri as the God above all others though this is a blasphemous belief in the company of most other faiths and the undermining of other cultures has in the past caused much grief to the Matsurisu.
Thoughts, additions, edits, critiques(outside of too much festival), ect. Need more Festival ideas

For added depth, we could draw more elements from the IRL cult of dionysus (Aka Duonysian Mysteries). Roman propaganda generally portrayed it as a bunch of useless hippies, but it was a pretty philosophical and politically activist groups. For example, elements of the Spartacus rebellions identified as embodiments of Dionysos. Hedonistic festivals are an expression of absolute freedom, so it kinda makes sense to me.

Historically, hedonistic festivals (The Dyonisia of athens, saturnalia of rome, Venice Festival, and I'm sure there are equivalents in many many cultures.) were basically moments when otherwise rigid social norms were relaxed and inverted. I remember a fun tidbit where during Saturnalia, gambling was allowed (it was usually outlawed) but you were supposed to gamble with nuts instead of money, to represent this relaxation of social and/or economic classes.
Anyway, a society built around such festivals would probably have a pretty fluid and interesting social structure, since that might lead to an erosion of what would otherwise be social taboos.

What are some tricks to craft a character that is perceived as unlikeable for the MC/reader, but is actually objectively pretty likeable?

>> No.51021710

>>51021001
Depends on who you have to compare them to and the circumstance.
House of the Dragon did this with Otto Hightower, a character who looks like a scheming bastard but actually only gives correct information and who legitimately has everyone's best interests in mind.

>> No.51022141

>>51021001
Also, I'd avoid having their positive qualities be displayed through actions off-screen, they should be things the audience is set up to view through a negative lense but make sense when viewed in an objective lense. Character who might be a dick but is a dick that is efficient and does his job, like Corkus. Corkus being a giant asshole eventually turns into comedic relief/makes sense because Guts somehow doesn't realize how much of a dick he is and when you learn more about him and his background it makes a lot more sense and justifies it within reason.

>> No.51022747

>>51022141
Makes sense, basically you figure out a negative spin for actions the character does and make sure the POV has that interpretation, but with a change of perspective, the intent is completely different. That's a good strat, effective but natural. Humans are very good at misunderstanding intentions. Corkus, that's a different approach I guess, instead of negative interpretation being wrong, it's rather Corkus' negative qualities that are justified by other stuff. Both can also be used in tandem.
That's a hell of a hot take on HOTD though, imo Otto caused the whole shitstorm by instructing his daughter to jump on the king's dick because he/his own dad wanted more power, rather than the good of everyone (whether that's the court or the nobles). He is a bit more grey than it seems, but just a bit.

I have an idea for a world that went through multiple complete cycles of colonization and complete extinction, the idea's to have those multiple levels of those massive underground catacombs, with the deepest being dozens of thousands of years old. Each period of inhabitation could be separated by thousands of years of abandonment too.

Oh, that's a fun thought. The temperature as you get deeper into a planet varies a lot depending of its geology. For the Earth, I think you're almost certainly above 100 degrees celsius past 5 kilometers, below that you'd need systems to cool shit down if you want it to be inhabitable. But on a planet that is tectonically inactive, it might be pretty temperate many more kilometers below the surface. Hell, if you found a completely dead planet maybe you could do some 0-G shenanigans near the core of the planet.

I feel like you posted your answer. Angels are pretty strongly death-themed, plus Serafi in particular has the whole skull aesthetic, and you already have an underground thing with her, right? Planet-spanning angelic catacombs, maybe in a world where the surface is uninhabitable.
If a world where the surface pressure is too low maybe you could end up having livable atmosphere if you dig down deep enough, since pressure increases with depth.

>>51081829
I feel it’s more a punk thing than a death thing (although with any luck we might get someone represented by the Death card) though underground cities do have a tomb feeling to it (even though the reason I gave her the caves the main setting is because it’s the best way to make it look like alleyways)
That said I do wanna have underground cities on both Despina and the desert planet one step closer to the star since they’re cool! I thought about filling them with belym subspecies (maybe not full Blind Folk but still) but I don’t know if there’s enough time and isolation to make speciation happen. I saw wiki mentioning lower temperature and higher oxygen could cause rapid evolution but I can’t find the source so far. If that works and I have the belyms being more short-lived maybe it could work (or maybe they actively engineered themselves to fit in different biomes)

Psionic connection? Or some sort of laser communication using modified organic transmitters/receptors. Imagine having tiny moving eyes under the metal armor. All depends on what kind of look you want.

>> No.51085105

>>51082390
There is also a certain aesthetic with Sinners being relegated to the subterranean that has an afterlife feel... But that's true, the eventual Death VNU would probably be a more obvious fit for that.
I don't think a few thousand years is enough for natural adaptation, but it might be enough for directed evolution, which would be a compromise between adaptation and bioengineering. Basically, individuals get small genetic changes with gene therapy to improve their living conditions (with something like CRISPR), and then those artificial mutations are passed down and their descendants get modified further. So the genetic edits compound, in vastly increase the speed at which the species evolves.
>>51084097
>psionic
That feels obvious in retrospect, our equivalent of that would be some kind of catalog-based communication... That could work nicely, assuming the biomechanical drones have souls.
Laser communication sounds cool too though, eyes receiving and emitting signal lasers from under bits of transparent carapace is a really neat design element. That has the drawback of requiring line-of-sight, but for space operations that isn't a massive issue, and maybe psionic or radio comms can be a slower/lower bandwidth backup if you don't have line-of-sight to your drone.

Science anon's weird question, what actually is Gravity? I heard a weird thing that we dont know what Gravity is and that a science is based off of observing the derivative affects of gravity in different conditions and that we don't actually know what causes it.
I thought all mass had gravitational force and attraction but then I remembered Black Holes and Black Holes don't have mass right? They have to have some sort of mass otherwise they wouldn't have gravity because its a property of mass and something can't have mass otherwise it can't exist. Do things exist that dont have mass? Light has mass right because light is effected by gravity and when we talked about light in black holes, they do exert a force so light is definitely matter and has mass.
But gravity effects space more than it effects light because of those diagrams where light literally skipped over space to due to the gravitational force and it only bends at the event horizon and the event horizon is called that because its the point at which gravity is so strong light can't escape it. Light has mass, light has to have mass because we know light exists and light has to have matter because something that doesn't have matter can't exist.
I'm wrong somewhere, but how much?

>what actually is Gravity?
Gravity is a result of any object with a mass bending spacetime, the warp of which in turn results in the effect of gravity.
>Black Holes don't have mass right?
Black holes are formed when stars with enough mass die and collapse into themselves, so no, they have mass. Most of what the collapsed star had, in fact, and this eventually grows as they consume more matter around them.
>Do things exist that dont have mass?
Yes, protons, which is light.
>Light has mass right because light is effected by gravity and when we talked about light in black holes, they do exert a force so light is definitely matter and has mass.
No. completely wrong. Gravity in no way affects light, it affects the spacetime it travels on.
If you draw a straight line on a piece of paper and then bend the paper, the line is still straight, it's the paper that is bent. In this case, the line is photons, the paper is spacetime and you bending the paper is gravity. Simple, right?
>But gravity effects space more than it effects light because of those diagrams where light literally skipped over space to due to the gravitational force
I have no idea what you mean by this, could you explain in a bit more detail?
>and the event horizon is called that because its the point at which gravity is so strong light can't escape it
Actually, the event horizon would be the last point at which light CAN escape, but that's semantics. What really traps the light is that the black hole bends spacetime so much it curves into itself and no matter which direction you would go, you could only ever go towards the centre of the black hole. If we were to take our piece of paper from before, the one with the straight line, and bent it in such a way that it would make a ball (without breaking it of course.(this is just a thought experiment) that straight line could do nothing but loop on itself.

Ah okay light has no mass and light, but I'm confused because if something has jo mass than it also doesn't have matter and that just seems insane. How do we measure protons if they have no mass and no physical presence? Gravity can't effect light directly and light doesn't take up space but we can still look at it and do stuff with it, isn't that weird? How does something exist without taking up space? How does something not take up space but still exist?

Hoo boy, you're in for a wild ride of you start studying this field.
>How do we measure protons if they have no mass and no physical presence?
To quote wikipedia: "A photon is an elementary(which means it's not comprised of any other particles) particle that is a quantum(the smallest possible unit) of the electromagnetic field, including electromagnetic radiation such as light and radio waves, and the force carrier for the electromagnetic force."
Just because something has no mass, it doesn't mean that is undetectable, it just requires different detectors. Fields and forces can be measured, because some energy has to be expelled in order for them to exist, and it is that energy that we detect. The only time something truly doesn't exist is when it has no mass AND no energy.

>What actually is Gravity
"We dont know" is a valid answer. It is thought to be the bending of spacetime due to the influence of Energy and Momentum (so technically speaking, not mass or matter specifically). This is the theory of General Relativity, and while on large scale it works beautifully well, it does not work on the very small scales where we have another very good and working theory, Quantum Mechanics and the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
So, we know that Quantum Mechanics exist, and that quantum scale systems behave as predicted by Quantum Mechanics. We know that Gravity exists, and we know that Gravity behaves like it does according to General Relativity. It would be natural to then combine the two models and create the "Theory of Everything", which would explain how the entire universe works.

There lies the issue. When we try to do this, everything breaks down. Quantum Mechanics, the Standard Model, and General Relativity do not work together, but separate they do work beautifully well. This is a sign that something is wrong with one, or all, of the models, and we do not know what. Theories like the String Theory are attempts at unifying the two, but those models have their own issues, particularly with string theory that for it to work we would have to assume 10 spatial dimensions instead of our observable 3. Physicists do not like making assumptions like those unless they can be measured and verified.

>Nature of Mass and Energy
Yes, black holes have mass, and no, light does not have mass, nor does it have matter. Let me explain.
So, it turns out that Matter is not a fundamental building block of existence, but that it is instead merely another form Energy can take. Mass is Energy, in a literal sense.
This is where we get the famous E=mc^2, telling us that Mass ("m" in the equation) is directly equivalent to Energy ("E" in the equation). The "c" is the speed of light, which is a universal unchanging constant.

This is where we get into Nuclear Fission and Fusion as well, although this is a bit of a tangent. It turns out that when we split a uranium atom, the halves of the split atom combined weight less than the whole uranium atom. Same happens when we fuse Hydrogen into Helium: The Hydrogen atoms alone had more mass than the helium atom does. The difference in mass turns to energy, in the form of light (Gamma and X-ray Radiation), and momentum in the form of the kinetic energy of the atom or the particles that were born from the reaction (Alpha and Beta radiation).

E=mc^2 only describes "stationary" systems though, and for objects that move we need to expand it by adding a Momentum part, turning the equation into E=mc^2 + pc.
"p" here means Momentum, and "c" is the same speed of light as above.
So, since light AKA Photons do not have mass, the equation describing their energy becomes just E=pc, meaning that it is entirely defined by their momentum. For photons, p = hk, where "h" is the Planck Constant, and "k" is a number describing the (inverse) wavelength of the photon. Photon momentum and by extension photon energy is thus inversely related to it's wavelength - Longer Wavelengths (Radiowaves, Microwaves, Red Light) have less energy than Shorter Wavelengths (Gamma Rays, X-Rays, Blue Light).

Because Gravity interacts not with just Mass-Energy, but with Momentum, and Photons have Momentum, it follows that Photons are affected by Gravity despite being massless. This also means that photons do indeed exert a very very tiny Gravitic pull, despite having no mass and no matter. This is how you get the idea of the kugelblitz, theoretical prediction of the General Relativity; a black hole formed from concentrated photons.
From light having Momentum also follows that Photons can push things. This is where ideas such as Laser Sails come from.

You could think of Mass and Light as being just two sides of the same coin, that is Energy, with Energy being the fundamental building block of existence for STUFF as you know it.
Matter on the other hand is its own thing. I'll explain more about matter in the next post.

Honestly, I think any targeted study regimen will be less effective than "Just read, nigger", merely because it will be easier to do a lot of the latter as well as way more enjoyable.
So, I'd say just start on a list of top tier books and work your way through it, and that should be better for literary diction than almost anything else.
Keeping a thesaurus at hand while writing can also be useful, if you're conscious about trying not to use only words you're familiar with.

>Matter
So, by "Matter" one usually means stuff you can touch, and see, and feel; stuff that occupies space in an exclusive manner (as in, no two objects with matter can occupy the same space). This is a quality of just one type of particles, called Fermions. Fermions are stuff like Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.

Fermions are subject to a law of nature called "Pauli Exclusion Principle", which states that only ONE Fermion can ever occupy the same quantum state, that is, to be in the same spot in space ("Have their probability wavefunctions overlap") AND have the same Quantum Numbers. If one were to try to push Fermions together, the Fermions would exert a massive force pushing back. In objects such as White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars, it is this force, called "Degeneracy Pressure", that holds back against Gravitational Collapse.

When the effects of Gravity become higher than the Degeneracy Pressure, and by logic Fermions should be forced to occupy the same states, everything breaks down in a manner catastrophic both in physical and mathematical and we get a Singularity, an infinitely tiny point (or a ring if it is spinning) where all the mass of the object is resting. These objects are better known as Black Holes, and what exactly goes on in the singularity and what happened to the matter is pretty much unknown.

Due to the effects of the law, Electrons around atomic nuclei are forced into different orbits, as their number increased. This is how we get the entire field of Chemistry, which at its core is the study of how electrons around atoms behave.

There are particles other than Fermions. These particles are not affected by the Pauli Exclusion Principle, and are thus free to occupy the same states. These particles are known as "Bosons", and they are stuff like Photons, and Gluons (irrelevant for our topic), and so on. To better understand how two particles can be in the same space, think of waves.

Imagine throwing a stone into one side of a still pond. It creates ripples. Then imagine throwing another stone in the other side of the pond. It again creates ripples.
You would then observe that these ripples are not reflected from each other when they meet in the middle, instead they seem to pass through each other. The ripples clearly exist but seemingly they do not care at all about space. Bosons, including Photons, are very much like that, waves in their respective quantum fields. They can exist on top of and inside of each other (one could say that they are "superposed", which is a state we shall call a "superposition").

tl;dr: Fermions are jealous girlfriends who fight off any and all other fermions trying to encroach on their quantum-position state oshi, while Bosons are sluts that are willing to gangbang in the same quantum-position with each other.

>How do we measure Photons
They have Energy and Momentum. When Photons hit stuff that can accept their energy, they are absorbed, meaning that their energy is transferred to the object that absorbed them. This change in the object's energy can be measured, and experienced.

Especially pay attention to how the shape of the visible universe around you changes as you get closer and closer to the event horizon. Every second, ask yourself "in what direction should you move to get away from the event horizon?"

You will see the event horizon grow in size, and then become to envelop around you. This is the visual effect of space bending around you as described by the other anon. The closer you get, the larger the fraction of space around you occupied by the event horizon gets, until eventually only it remains, and you are left in complete darkness. That is the moment you crossed the event horizon. Here, if you ask yourself where to move to move away from the darkness of the event horizon, you will find no answer. There is only the event horizon and it is everywhere around you. Escaping is not a question of speed, because no matter how fast you moved in any of the directions, you would only arrive into more darkness.

You are right in the most parts, although you did accidentally mix up photons and protons in the text.
I would like to clarify though that it is sort of confusing to claim that Gravity does not affect photons, since Gravity is the bending of spacetime and Photons are affected by the bend. While it is accurate in the sense that Gravity does not exert a classical force on photons, according to GN, Gravity would not do that for ANY object, massive or massless. The only type of particle not affected by GN Gravity would be a particle with no mass and no momentum, and a particle like that would not exist at all, since it would not have any energy, like you mentioned in the latest post.
Good posts tho.

Sciencekino. I want to shill this video which models effects that you'd likely see in a physical black hole, such as the accretion disk and blue-shifting.
https://youtu.be/17tEg_uTF_A
Also, the "singularity" is the prediction of GR, and models the behaviour of the outside of the Event Horizon pretty alright. But by "what exactly goes on in the singularity and what happened to the matter is pretty much unknown.", anon means we really don't know if there's even a singularity at all.
Personally, I don't buy it, I think a quantum gravity theory would find the inside of the event horizon to contain a fuzzball (as in superstring theory), as this resolves the information paradox and removes the non-physical mathematical infinities of the system.

With your video in particular, it is worthy to note that it models the Doppler effect of the accretion disk around the black hole semi-well: The stuff moving towards you (the right side of the appearing brighter than the stuff moving away from you (the left side)
However, it is missing the redshift effect on the left side.
Its a very pretty video, the only reason why I didnt choose to use it is that it does not show the actual crossing of the event horizon.
This one is also cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AiJpvergBI

Since its something that is not often thought about, and took me a long time to realize; with a black hole with an accretion disk, you see a band of light surround the event horizon on its top and bottom. Afaik, this is not because there is anything orbiting the black hole there, you are seeing the light from the accretion disk behind the black hole bending around the black hole on both of its poles, making it appear as if there was stuff there when there isnt.

I personally find that really cool.

I think for this black hole, it does model redshift, it's just shifting emissions that peak in the x-ray/gamma range to a dimmer blue. Some accretion disks get really extremely hot.
That's a cool video too, nice sound design. It reminds me of yet another "falling into a black hole" video, but instead of a visualization it's a vivid description with SFX... This one.

That might be who they are now but at the beginning they were just belyms who found a strange structure while dying from exposure in a huge salt pan. They assumed the symbols scattered across the structure to be a holy symbol since the place provided shelters for them and saved them from death. As time goes on they began venturing and digging deeper until they found a vast underground complex littered with more holy symbols and strange unknown material alongside encrypted knowledge. They managed to decipher some of them which made them much more advanced than others in the region even if they got cursed with horrible boils and death as a price for the divine knowledge. They still considered it a fair bargain though which also steered their culture towards death veneration due to their enhanced mortality (kinda like the Necrons) and the culture was too entrenched by the time they actually figured out what was going on
