Every fucking time. How do people still do exactly this same mistake like 3 decades running now.

There are some fundamental things at play here with how the brain interprets things as cute or not - anime has dialed in on a specific style over time because it just works automatically; it can't really be altered much because they already perfected it - messing with the formula drifts over into uncanny if the imitation doesn't know what it's doing, which is usually the case.

It's like thinking your car is going to run better if you "reinvent" the wheels and add a square part to them so it's "unique" and "yours" now, which is stupid to an engineer/scientist, but artists have a need to sell themselves as creative (or convince themselves they're that) and try to "innovate" or "improve" on a look refined over half a century by thousands of people thinking they can single-handedly do a better job. That just gets you things like OP.
