In EN it's a mix of muh Japanese culture, management and them trying to hide their real voices. If you can stream with a different voice to better play a character that's fine but I don't think that anyone wants or demands you to fuck up your vocal cords nearly as much as in JP.

So they can sound like the anime characters they're roleplaying as. Easy.

I used to have a more normal sounding voice and wanted to become a "mommy" vtuber but I went through a car accident that not only paralyzed the majority of my body but destroyed quite a bit of my throat so now I have this awful higher pitched voice which sounds fake so I chose to be a loli vtuber instead. I'm too afraid to tell any of my viewers about this because a lot of people already hate how my voice sounds lol...
